Farming with Purpose: Ronny Kgwedi's Inspiring Story

Meet Papa Hezekiel Kgwedi, affectionately known as Ronny, a farmer whose journey from humble beginnings to thriving agricultural enterprise is a testament to perseverance, innovation, and a deep connection to the land.

A Humble Beginning with a Twist

Ronny's farming journey took an unexpected turn when a commercial farmer gifted him a pig during a visit to Ermelo. Transporting the pig home in his brother's Golf presented a messy challenge, but this serendipitous event proved to be the catalyst for a remarkable venture. The fast-growing boar was crossbred with Ronny's indigenous black pigs, resulting in a hardy and productive new line of piglets. The proceeds from selling these piglets enabled him to acquire pure Large White and Landrace gilts, laying the foundation for a successful farming project.

Recognition and Growth

Ronny's dedication did not go unnoticed. The Department of Agriculture's extension officers recognised his potential and entered him into the Youth in Agriculture competition. His hard work paid off when he was awarded Young Aspirant Farmer of the Year in 2006 in Limpopo. This recognition validated his passion and commitment to farming, and he has since become a role model for aspiring farmers in his community.

A Flourishing Enterprise

?Today, Ronny's farm spans hundreds of hectares, cultivating a diverse range of crops, including potatoes, tomatoes, cabbages, butternut, and leafy vegetables. He also raises cattle, Boer goats, and Dorpers. His farm's produce is sold locally in stores such as Spar and Pick n Pay, with some even being exported to Mozambique. Ronny's success has enabled him to invest in modern farming technology and equipment, further increasing his productivity and efficiency.
