Farmers Speak Out: Climate Change & Organic Farming Impact

We listen to the voices of those at the heart of cocoa farming, our farmers. As part of our Impact Series, we spoke with 30 farmers to understand how climate change is affecting their work and the difference organic farming is making in their lives.

The Unpredictability of Climate

  • 100% of farmers reported observing changes in climate patterns.
  • 70% of farmers struggle to predict planting seasons due to erratic weather.

Every farmer we spoke with has noticed changes in the climate. Rainy seasons no longer follow the familiar March-to-October pattern, and dry seasons from November to February have become erratic. Rainfall during dry months and scorching sun during wet months make it difficult to plan farming activities. One farmer put it simply: "It is either the rains never stop falling or the sun never stops shining." This unpredictability impacts everything—from planting to drying and storing cocoa, to farm maintenance like weeding and pruning. Excess rain encourages weed growth, increasing labor costs, while extreme dryness can cause cocoa trees to wither and die.

The Organic Difference

  • 85% of farmers have seen an increase in natural biodiversity on their farms.
  • 90% of farmers report improvements in soil health and crop resilience.

Switching to organic farming has brought renewed hope. Farmers report a resurgence of food crops like mushrooms, cocoyam, and peppers—once scarce due to chemical use. The soil is healthier, earthworms and millipedes have returned, and nearby river bodies—used for drinking and irrigation—are no longer contaminated with chemical residues. Not only has this transition improved health and sustainability, but farmers have also benefited from premium incentives, new opportunities for women, seedlings, boreholes, and savings groups.

Making the Most of Premiums

  • 60% of farmers use premiums to pay for labor and farm maintenance.
  • 40% of farmers invest in education and transportation.

For many, the organic premium is life-changing. Most farmers use it to hire labourers, pay school fees, or invest in transportation like tricycles and motorbikes to create additional income. Others set aside portions for family support and community events, ensuring a better quality of life for all.

Understanding Cocoa Prices

  • 65% of farmers are unaware of global cocoa market prices.
  • 75% of farmers struggle with currency conversion challenges.

Despite their dedication, many farmers remain unaware of global cocoa market prices. Some struggle to convert foreign currency rates to local currency, making it difficult to gauge their earnings. This highlights the need for better financial literacy and transparency in the cocoa trade.

We stand with our farmers. By prioritising sustainability, fair trade, and farmer empowerment, we grow cocoa and support thriving communities.
