Farhan shares with us his motivations to volunteer in the Mental Health scene.

The next time before you dismiss an over-indulgence in a particular matter as ‘obsessive compulsive disorder’ (OCD), pause for a second to consider the likely impact of your statement. Although many of such remarks were made casually with no ill intent, they often perpetuate the misconceptions and trivialisation of OCD, among other mental health conditions.?

Understanding the deep-seated problems related to mental health issues, Farhan wanted to make a difference by breaking down the barrier for people struggling with their mental wellness so that they can seek help. He embarked on his volunteering journey with Youth Corps Singapore Mental Health Cluster and has since been involved in many outreach programmes.

“I’ve observed that there is a stigma in the community for people facing mental health challenges to seek professional treatment. I hope this can change, and I want to contribute to a more supportive environment for those affected,” shared Farhan.

His dedication to the cause saw him consistently showing up to lead Cluster’s events despite the demanding hours he clocks for shift work. He also walks the talk of advocating for self-care in building mental resilience by making time for his passion outside of work – Brazilian Jiujitsu. This, together with volunteering, helps restore balance in his pace of life as he gets to do different things that are rewarding in their own ways.

One of Farhan’s most significant learning points in volunteering is picking up good event management skills. He will get to put the skill to good use very soon as he plans for the event of a lifetime – his own wedding. With Farhan’s track record of creating memorable and meaningful experiences at Youth Corps events, there is no doubt that his wedding will be a truly special occasion.
