Farewell, And Welcome
Sabrina McDonnell speaks at graduation

Farewell, And Welcome

If you listen closely, while standing on Tiger Plaza, you might still hear the last lingering notes of “Pomp and Circumstance” mingling with the “Alma Mater” chimes of the Reynolds Alumni Center tower. Another graduation weekend has long passed us by, but finally, this year, there’s no mistaking it; the cadence of Mizzou’s traditions has fully returned to campus.

I’m happy to report our newest alumni continue the rich academic and research legacy of Mizzou, and have brought their talent, dedication, and more to their time on campus. They were just the kind of students we love to brag about; tenacious, perseverant, and dedicated to upholding our university’s stellar reputation. It was my honor and privilege to preside over their graduation ceremonies this spring, along with our other traditional campus events this year, as a representative of our board members and, in a sense, every Mizzou alum.?

And yet, the importance and impact of our association may be greatest outside the boundaries of campus. As MAA president, I felt an incredible sense of obligation and responsibility to ensure the opportunities made available to our 340,000 worldwide alumni were strengthened and preserved. Beyond that, I know each of my fellow board members shares a similar desire to convey the weight and impact a single member can have; every time an alum recommends Mizzou, supports a Mizzou graduate for a job hire, or even just wears their black and gold — all of these choices make Mizzou stronger.

I want to thank each of our brilliant, enthusiastic volunteers, including the ones who comprise our MAA board, for their leadership and dedication as they continue to support Todd McCubbin and our talented MAA staff. Their work is steering this organization towards an even brighter future. I also am so grateful to have followed, as MAA President, one of the most devoted supporters Mizzou will ever have in Robin Wenneker. I now pass the gavel along with confidence to a True Son, Jeff Vogel.?

As a member — like all of us — I represent something much bigger than myself, and we all have that same opportunity. So as one of my last acts as President, I implore each of you to “opt in.” Opt in to offering your time, talent and resources in support of your fellow Tigers; opt in towards ensuring our traditions, connections and legacy grow ever stronger. The Mizzou Alumni Association offers each of us the invitation to stay informed and stay involved. And, no matter where you go, you’ll always be welcomed Home.

I hope to see you at Homecoming, Tigers. Until then, M-I-Z…
