Farewell & Gratitude, Yours Sincerely

Farewell & Gratitude, Yours Sincerely

I am not a fan of the saying, "??? ??? ??," which translates to "Everything happens for a reason." It implies every experience holds a lesson, but I disagree. Some things, like the loss of a parent, leave you shattered with no room for growth.

However, the saying somehow makes sense to me in a career context. Reflecting on my career across NGOs, private firms, and government agencies, I realize every experience leaves a mark, positive or negative, and I am grateful for both.

Sure, some workplaces were downright traumatizing. I complained a lot then, but looking back, I wouldn't change a thing with a time machine. As much as I hate saying this term, those experiences made me stronger. They showed me how committed I am to my career and that I don't leave unless it's for a significantly better opportunity, no matter the hardship. I am not sure if this is always the right thing to do, but with my career being a part of my identity, it makes sense.

On the flip side, there are incredible workplaces that helped me flourish. This post is a farewell to one such place: Population Services International/Ethiopia (PSI/E) .

A while back, I wrote about creating an "enabling environment" in market-based sanitation, and how the concept translates beautifully to workplaces. PSI created such an environment for me. I became a much better communicator after my time there.

My incredible line manager, Fana A. Abay , consistently pushed me beyond my comfort zone, but always with open communication and clear expectations. It was exactly what I needed. It kept me sharp, maximizing my potential and productivity.

This is a farewell to that fantastic place. As they say, all things must come to an end. Now, it's on to the next chapter, where I'll continue learning and growing.

Thank you, PSI Ethiopia, for the incredible time! You helped me become a better communicator, a stronger colleague, and a more well-rounded professional. I will forever cherish the time spent with your amazing team.
