Farewell, Game of Thrones, the Last Greatest Show on Television

Judging from the chatter on the interwebs since the third episode of Game of Thrones' final season, I feel like I’m in the minority here…but I’m satisfied with how the series ended.
It occurs to me that Game of Thrones will be the last Greatest Television Show of All Time. Oh sure, perhaps another video-based story in episodic format may one day match — or even surpass — its universal popularity, water-cooler-discussion value and impact on modern pop culture…but that show in all likelihood will not be on television. At least not TV as we know it.
Whatever that show will be, it’s unlikely that it will be in a format on a cable TV platform, where the viewer is told that each episode is available only at an appointed time, that he must wait another week before the next installment drops. Or that the viewer will be limited in any way by carrier, or a specific format or device he must use. That show will probably come from a streaming service like Netflix or Amazon Prime or even Disney’s upcoming new subscription service.
One final message to everyone who are dissatisfied with the directions the final season took or are angry that their favorite character didn’t fare as well as they’d hoped. For those ready to direct fire and blood towards the show creators…make sure to thank them first for giving us this great show, you pissy ingrates.

5 年And just in. The Finale titled "The Iron Throne", garnered even more viewer at 19.3m. I enjoyed the last episode, and would put Peter Dinkage's performance as Tyrion Lannister as one of the best in the series, especially in the final speech. https://edition.cnn.com/2019/05/20/media/game-of-thrones-finale-ratings/index.html

5 年Episode 5 of GoT broke HBO records with a reach of just over 18 million, or about the same as the last episode of Big Bang Theory. Now compare both to the last episode of MASH, way back in 1983, which reached over 105 million. No one will ever hit those numbers again.

5 年You'd be surprised, there's a lot of ppl that couldn't care less about the show. Think true it was a behemoth of the geek/uberfan internet - but it is still a long way from being something like what Seinfeld or Friends was. We're talking a small game now... with the cable & now streaming wars - it'll always be a fight for the niche. And in that - Game of Thrones excelled - ending or no ending. Leave it to sports to move hundreds of millions of ppl once again.

5 年It was quite funny when there was a guide to watching the final series of GOT as people thought that there was a lighting problem with their screens as the cinematographers wanted to have a dim and dark setting but it turned out to be too dark for the audience to view it. A darkened room - with grim scenes showcases the emotional impact for the finale. The only series that draws controversy on Netflix - I think I'd have to keep rewatching it till I get over its the end.?

5 年It was so intense. Season 8 was really an extended final episode.?
