Farewell from the NZ Software Association

Farewell from the NZ Software Association

Earlier this year the NZ Software Association officially ceased operations.

After pausing the monthly events in 2020 during COVID 19 lockdowns, the executive committee explored the future for the NZSA. While the NZSA had a loyal membership and solid financials, we had been largely superseded by the expansion in government services, professionally managed tech communities, well established incubators, and a vibrant investment community. After exploring several options with members, it was finally agreed we should wind up the NZSA.

Our final order of business this year was to distribute our residual funds. After working through a range of proposals, two very worthy recipients were approved by the members:

  • Angel Association NZ, for their Runway Programme: Runway is designed for early stage startups - their founders and CEOs, together with existing and budding investor directors. You can find out more about AANZ events here: https://www.angelassociation.co.nz/aanz-events/
  • Hi-Tech Foundation, for their Endowment Fund: creating a long term legacy for the sector, targeted at getting more talent into the NZ Hi-Tech sector – helping solve the skills gap. You can find out more about the endowment fund here: https://www.hitech.org.nz/foundation/endowment-fund/

The NZSA has been a place where people with passion and courage could support each other as we built innovative businesses. With the invaluable backing of many sponsors and joint initiatives with government agencies, the NZSA has played a formative role in the tech sector for 30 years. The work in the early days as the NZ Software Exporters Association set us on the path that has made the tech sector NZ's second largest exporter earner. You can read more about the legacy left by the NZSA here: https://www.nzsa.org.nz/

On a personal note, it has been an absolute privilege to have been President of the NZSA. Thank you everyone who contributed their time and energy, and also to those who participated in our events. You made the NZSA a very special community. I have loved getting to know so many amazing people and hearing about your incredible journeys.

I wish you all the best for the future, and I hope our paths will cross again.

Roger Ford, President, NZ Software Association.

Sad to hear this news. Such a great association that supported the launch of many new software businesses.
