G7 Hiroshima Summit has just kicked off!
G6, 7, whatever... this summit always looks like a business meeting with old friends.
Let's go through basic statistical data of G7 and some additional countries as key players of world economy icl. my current location Czechia, then you'll find out the meaning of the title of this article.
At the same time, let's concentrate on the RELATIONSHIPS between countries.
I know that some labels are not displayed well, but you recognize which is which w/o any difficulties as a business person.
"Japan has the world's third-largest economy" - this quote is lead just the based on the above-stated data.
Question No.1??:
Is there any direct connection between the largest economy and wealth?
The next graph is considered as "more relevant". What does relevant means?
GDP/capita shows information which meat our imagination or the answer to a simple question: How rich or how poor - how the average/middle society look like?
An important indication which we should not miss is shown in the following graph.
There is more than a realistic compounded word in Japanese "軍需".
This simple idiom shows a relation between War and Money. "The war brings opportunities to someone / some parties to take advantage and do lucrative business. "
Question No.2??:
How does real economy of Japan look like?
My answer is here. "Why do you need this information?"
An overal information, i.e. summary of statistical data, figures, don't tell you "how you should cook with materials (how to analyze and utalize for your business)" if you don't obtain information of socio-cultural-historical backgrounds.
Japan is losing its place among world leaders such as Monodukuri know-how in Shinkansen (bullet train) industries, Electro industries or more concretely semi-conductor business are introduced as a Textbook of Regret.
"Copying technology" is a bit controversial. Just ask your reliable engineer where is there anything which we can't copy nowadays. The answer is clear. "Everything is possible."
Japan's week pint is not leak of information at all. Engineers who retired in Japan want to work more and they're willing to go to Asian countries to get paid more.
This shift of knowledgeable to abroad is a big loss. But this is a reasonable deal or the only option for Japanese who would like to maintain his income level. See the graph of the poverty rate.

Question No.3??:
Are Japan and USA good friends?
Generally, it is hard to find or listen criticisms on USA among Japanese.
Recently, an additional pro-USA trend in education came up. A slogan sounds: "You'd better aim for Harvard than the University of Tokyo". This trend will be boosted thanks to the youngest mayor in history in Japan, a Harvard College alum (Read the following article.)
USA is the most famous country to immigrate among Japanese.
Japanese with US permanent residence in USA: Approx. 223,260
Japanese with US permanent residence in Australia: Approx. 61,270
The following website is available only in Japanese.
Japan seems to be a very convenient friend, from one aspect, for USA who do not blame Americans for atomic bombings and let US Military bases stay in Japan (Approx.263,585,000 m2). The following website is available only in Japanese.
When we talk about business partnership, this graph from 2021 is a mirror of relationship. USA is the top trading partner of Japan since 2013 (again).
There are many studies about US-Japan friction, but as a number of Japanese companies have been operating in US, the business partnership can remain as Win-Win.

Maintaining a good relationship is pretty difficult under the deep economic crisis.
Japan's economic stagnations known as Lost Decades started '90s, but no reasonable... effective... well, genuine countermeasures have not been introduced yet.
It sounds like a paradox to someone, but such a strong economic partnership is not a prove of a strong friendship.
Japanese don't know American society well and American don't know Japanese society well.
Because... (TBCL)
I'm a Japanese who said as a primary school student "Goodbye America".
I just thought we Japanese were crazily oriented to USA w/o practical knowledge of English, any deeps surveys, understanding their culture and "what is America".
USA was the top or 1st country which I deleted from the list of destination for one-year student exchange program in my age of 17. I wanted to try, as usual, a less popular choice.
No-English speaking country.
As a Japanese PhD researcher in Czechia, I've just started networking with US universities. I believe my long-term business backgrounds and theoretical and practical knowledge, as intangible assets, about Japanese, European and US relationships can enhance networking in scientific fields and disciplines.

1 年Great article Namiko. Wealth, political power or dominance is always based on subjective feelings. Whoever wants to advocate any specific country, will always find the “right statistical data” to support his explanation. The truth is that we are seeing changes, and we will experience some significant changes against the positions which were kind of “status quo” since WWII times. And is that a change to better? Hmmmm, I am very unsure… #BusinessWithTouch
