In business today, people judge us immediately based on how we are dressed, before we even get to say one word. Unfair? Yep! I run my own soft skills corporate training business in Tokyo. Every day I carefully choose my clothes to determine that so important first impression. How do you handle it?

This day I had a very early morning, online, second meeting with a potential multinational client based in the US who was looking to train their Japan sales team, a meeting with my Head of Sales and an Executive Coaching session with a multinational client based in Seoul. I had lunch at the Tokyo American Club in Azabudai, always hoping to bump into clients but none spotted this day. Although when I returned to go the gym that evening I was approached in the gym by someone asking me about presentation training. That was a nice bonus to go with my workout.

I wanted to look sharp, but also welcoming for the online meetings. The weather had turned very cold, very quickly, so I chose my winter navy chalk stripe single breasted custom suit. It had notch lapels, side vents, flap pockets, double cuffs and I wore over the calf navy socks. The light blue shirt was from Thomas Pink London, with French Cuffs, the cufflinks were blue and white from Barneys New York. The handmade tie from Italy was Shantung silk from Rampley & Co London tied in a Four-In-Hand knot. Even though it had stripes in the design, there was no conflict or competition with the chalk stripe because the stripe in the tie was very much more broad than the chalkstripe. This is the secret to matching stripes - keep the sizes apart and there will be no issue. The pocket square in a reverse puff was light blue with white polka dots to create some contrast with the stripes in the suit and the tie.

The silver corporate badge from Dale Carnegie, the pen was my black and gold Mont Blanc, the business card holder from Lanvin, the watch my vintage gold 40mm Versace with a Medusa design, custom cobolt blue nubuck alligator strap by Jean Rousseau.

The high shine shoes were black Pollini Derbys with a very broad toe cap to suit my broad feet.
