Fare Bella Figura - Make A Good Impression, Be A Sharp Dressed Man, Episode #119 (Video here:https://bit.ly/4fUp5Hb )
In business today, people judge us immediately based on how we are dressed, before we even get to say one word. Unfair? Yep! I run my own soft skills corporate training business in Tokyo. Every day I carefully choose my clothes to determine that so important first impression. How do you handle it?
This day I had an interview for my podcast Japan's Top Business Interviews which has over 30,000 downloads, with Corinne Southarewsky, the COO of Axa Insurance here in Japan. Lunch at the Tokyo American Club in Azabudai trying to bump into clients. In the afternoon, I had a second meeting with a multinational client who wants me to give a keynote presentation to all of their visiting global chiefs on doing business here in Japan. We were finalising what I would present to his Big Bosses.
I wanted to look sharp for my interview and for the client meeting. I chose my custom navy merino wool suit with fabric supplied by a leading Japanese importer of wool from Australia. The suit had notch lapels, side vents, flap pockets, double cuffs, I was wearing over the calf navy socks.
The blue shirt was from Abelard 1922 with French Cuffs and the silver cufflinks were with my initial "S", a gift from my wife. The Italian handmade Shantung silk striped tie in a Four-In-Hand knot was a new one from Rampley & Co London. I had seen it on their videos with their resident stylist Chris Modoo and thought I would like to try it.
Technically, you could argue that Shantung silk ties are more for summer and I shouldn't be wearing them in the colder weather, but what the hell, I am impatient and wanted to see how it looked on me, regardless of the season. I have two other new Shantung silk ties, so expect to see them soon too!
The Shantung tie colour combination with burgundy, mustard, blue and white was quite strong, which might have been too much for podcast interview, so I chose a plain navy suit with no pinstripes, beadstripes, chalkstripes or window pane patterns and a blue shirt to take the temperature down a bit. The muted pocket square in a puff formation had some red in it to catch the burgundy in the tie and was from Ermenegildo Zegna.
The silver corporate badge from Dale Carnegie, the pen was my black and gold Mont Blanc, the business card holder from Lanvin, the watch my vintage gold 24m Cartier Tank Francaise with a black nubuck alligator strap.
The high shine black shoes were TLB Majorca Oxfords using a Goya last, with punched toe caps in boxcalf French leather from the D'Annonay tannery.
The shot was taken out on the street in Akasaka near my office, under natural light, because I thought it might do better justice capturing the colours in the Shantung silk tie, than under the artificial lights in our usual Mochizuki Room.
Would the people who know you or meet you describe you as persuasive? Do you think you are persuasive enough? Persuasion power is the most important, but the most commonly lacking skill in the business world. Do it yourself trial and error wastes time and resources. It is time to change things up and get that key skill.? There is a perfect solution for you- to LEARN MORE click here (https://bit.ly/3VhvR2B )
