In business today, people judge us immediately based on how we are dressed, before we even get to say one word. Unfair? Totally! I run my own soft skills corporate training business here in Japan. Now if we can positively influence that initial judgement of us, shouldn't we make an effort to control it? Every day I carefully choose my clothes to determine that critical first impression people will have of me, based on who my schedule says I will encounter that day. What do you do?
Know The Rule To Break The Rule: Classic Men's Wear Conventions
54. Try to wear high waisted trousers to elongate your frame. Not too high though or your tie will never work and it will always look too long.
This day, I had breakfast with a potential client at the French Kitchen in the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Roppongi Hills, and in the afternoon was teaching a followup session on presentation skills for a multi-national client in Nishi-Shinjuku.
I wanted to look very sharp for the client meeting, as he had spent decades working for one of the major luxury brands and was always very well dressed. Given I was teaching later, then the white shirt was obligatory.
I chose my custom, light blue beadstripe single breasted suit, with fabric from Carlo Barbera 1949 Super 140s Dolce Vita line, side vents, Barchetta Breast pocket, 35 mm double cuffs, double pleats, flap pockets, notch lapels and wore over the calf navy striped socks. The white shirt was from Abelard 1923 with French Cuffs, the mother of pearl cufflinks were from Simon Carter 1985 with the dots picking up the tie pattern, the navy and white London dot tie in a double Windsor was from Brooks Brothers 1818, the light blue geometric pattern blue pocket square from Rampley & Co 2014, the stabiliser from Kuska Fabrics 1936.
The silver corporate badge was from Dale Carnegie 1912 ,the pen was my black and gold Mont Blanc 1906, the business card holder from Lanvin 1889, the watch was my vintage, gold 40mm Versace 1978 with a Medusa design, custom cobolt nubuck alligator strap by Jean Rousseau Paris 1954.
The high shine Derby shoes were from Pollini 1953, with some brogueing on the medallion. The leather in these shoes really pops, so it is always rewarding when I shine them. My client was wearing Church Oxfords 1873 in their Consular range and he immediately noticed the high shine on my shoes. This tells him a lot about my reliability, attention to detail and professionalism. I bought these shoes in Milano back in June 2017, so I have owned them for nearly 8 years and they are in great shape. I am much better educated about shoes than when I bought them, so I am taking way better care of them today and they will last a very long time as a result.
Outerwear
My navy double breasted cashmere Armani 1975 over the knee overcoat, with peak lapels, flap pockets and a single rear vent. The blue cashmere scarf was from Regalo Felice 1960, the black Homburg from Locke & Co London 1676.
