In business today, people judge us immediately based on how we are dressed, before we even get to say one word. Unfair? Yep! I run my own soft skills corporate training business in Tokyo. Every day I carefully choose my clothes to determine that so important first impression. How do you handle it?

This day I had a joint networking event for the American Chamber, the Netherlands Chamber and the Australia New Zealand Chamber the latter for which I previously had been President. The venue was the Tokyo American Club and featured the Japan CEO of Domino's PIzza Japan Martin Steenks. He made some very interesting comments on how he leads in Japan and so I hit him up to be a guest on my podcast Japan's Top Business Interviews and let's see if he accepts. Later I had an internal meeting with my Head of Training and a meeting with a vendor supplying part-time staff. I wanted to look sharp and be the best put together in the large crowd gathered for the event that lunchtime. Usually that is not that hard. Very few guys connect the way they are presenting themselves in public with the impact that has on people's first impressions of them, so they don't think much about what they wear.

It was raining very heavily that day, so I needed my raincoat and a dark suit to not show the rain spots. I chose my trusty navy single breasted custom suit made from wool from Australia gifted to me from a textile company who import their Merino wool from Australia. The suit had notch lapels, side vents, double cuffs, flap pockets and I had on over the calf navy socks. The blue shirt with French Cuffs was from Abelard, the solid dark purple tie done in a double Windsor knot was from Thomas Pink London. I quite like the ties from Thomas Pink London and although this one was a very simple solid, they have some great designs. The purple cufflinks were from Thompson London Cufflinks. Purple is an Imperial colour, so it always adds a degree of sophistication to an outfit. The pocket square in a puff formation was light purple and blue from Etro, to pick up the dark purple in the tie and the navy blue in the suit.

The silver corporate badge from Dale Carnegie, the pen was my black and gold Mont Blanc, the business card holder from Lanvin, the watch my vintage rectangular 30mm Longines S30 EFCO with a black dial, stainless steel case and bracelet.

The high shine black Derby shoes from Pollini had Balmoral stitching where the stitching goes all the way around the shoe from the front to the back, wingtips, brogueing and a Ram's Head design on the medallion. Derby shoes are good for people like me with a high instep, because there is more give on the top of the vamp.

This shot was taken in our HQ with Dale supervising.

The outer wear was my sturdy slate blue classic Burbery raincoat. It comes with an inner jacket that unzips and is removable for the warmer months. Given how the temperatures are starting to drop, it may be time to zip that inner layer back in.
