Fare Bella Figura - Make A Good Impression, Be A Sharp Dressed Man, Episode #108 (Video here: https://bit.ly/4fcuI30 )
In business today, people judge us immediately based on how we are dressed, before we even get to say one word. Unfair? Yep! I run my own soft skills corporate training business in Tokyo. Every day I carefully choose my clothes to determine that so important first impression. How do you handle it?
This day I had a lunch meeting with Tak Adachi, the Queensland Government Commissioner for Japan, Korea and Taiwan at the Blue Room in the Tokyo Edition Hotel in Kamiyacho and presented him with my latest book "Japan Leadership Mastery". Since we first met in 1990 when we were both working for JLW in Australia, he is probably the person I have know the longest here in Japan. Later I had a followup meeting with a multinational client to present the Proposal for the training we have discussed for their team. Let's see is we get their business? I naturally wanted to look credible for my meetings.
What to wear was actually a dilemma. We are supposed to be in Fall, but the weather is still Summer - so what do you choose? I wondered if my blue summer suit was too out of season, but decided to go with the summer look, to reflect the actuality of the weather rather than the formality of the calendar.
This is a custom suit to replace a Pal Zileri suit I had bought which I loved, but had to give up on because the trousers wore out unbelievably fast. My first, only and last Pal Zileri suit! The custom blue suit had a small window pane pattern throughout, which you only notice when you get up close and personal. It had notch lapels, flap pockets, side vents, double cuffs and I wore navy over the calf socks. The blue shirt was from Abelard with French Cuffs, the navy and white stripe Shantung silk tie was handmade in Italy, the knot was a Four-In-Hand because the silk is so thick, there was no possibilty for my preferred double Windsor. The pocket square was from Amanda Christensen Sweden and the polka dot pattern in light blue and white created contrast with the blue in the suit.
The silver corporate badge from Dale Carnegie, the pen was my black and gold Mont Blanc, the business card holder from Lanvin, the watch my vintage gold 40mm Versace with a Medusa design on the face and custom Nubuck Alligator Cobolt Blue strap by Jean Rousseau.
The high shine black shoes were TLB Majorca Oxfords using a Goya last, with punched toe caps in boxcalf French leather from the D'Annonay tannery.
This shot was taken in the Mochizuki Room in our Akasaka HQ.
This shot was taken when I was presenting my old friend Tak Adachi with my book Japan Leadership Mastery at the Tokyo Edition Hotel. This photo was taken on the lobby floor of the Tokyo Editon Hotel after we had our lunch in the Blue Room. We caught up with Antonio Villasmil who is now restaurant manager for the restaurants and previously was at the Tokyo American Club for twenty years. Actually Antonio and I are classmates from when I did the Dale Carnegie Course for the second time.
