Fare Bella Figura - Make A Good Impression, Be A Sharp Dressed Man, Episode #125 (Video here
In business today, people judge us immediately based on how we are dressed, before we even get to say one word. Unfair? Yep! I run my own soft skills corporate training business in Tokyo. Every day I carefully choose my clothes to determine that so important first impression. How do you handle it?
Know The Rule To Break The Rule: Classic Men's Wear Conventions
This day I had a keynote speech for the entire visiting 10 person C-Suite of a European multi-national company talking about “Key Insights For Business Success In Japan” on the invitation of the local Japan Country Head.?
This was actually my 562nd public speech. Why do I keep track of them? I found in Japan, that if you do a good job, you get invited back to speak. It is embarrassing if you don't remember when you gave the previous speech and what was the content. So I started keeping track and now we are up number 562!
Sometimes HQ doesn’t hear your message and when they get the same message from a neutral expert, they accept the points more easily.?
Later that afternoon I was the guest on The Focus Core Podcast with host David Sweet, talking about leadership in Japan. Actually David has been a past guest on my own podcast Japan’s Top Business Interviews (Episode #38).? That evening I had a networking event at the Tokyo American Club in Azubudai, the farewell party for departing General Manager Darren Moorish, who has also been a guest on Japan’s Top Business Interviews, (Episode #99).
I wanted to look the complete professional for all of my events, so I chose my navy Brioni suit which has a subtle window pane pattern through it.? It has notch lapels, side vents, flap pockets, a Barretta (“little boat” in Italian to symbolise the rising prow of a boat, as the pocket rises from right to left) breast pocket, 33mm trouser cuffs, and I wore over the calf navy socks.
The white shirt with French Cuffs was from Abelard 1922, the cufflinks were blue and white from Barneys New York, the tie was a blue and white basket weave pattern from Kirby Allison, tied in a double Windsor knot, the pocket square was done in a puff formation and from Amanda Christensen Sweden 1885, the pocket square stabiliser from Kuska.
The silver corporate badge from Dale Carnegie, the pen was my black and gold Mont Blanc, the business card holder from Lanvin, the watch my vintage gold 24m Cartier Tank Francaise with a black nubuck alligator strap.
The high shine shoes were black Pollini Derbys with broguing on the medallion in the shape of a Ram’s Head and it had Balmoral stitching.
This shot was taken in the Mochizuki Room in our HQ in Akasaka.
I was walking out of the Tokyo American Club in Azabudai after the farewell party for General Manager Darren Moorish, when I spotted Tokyo Tower all lit up, so It took this shot.
Would the people who know you or meet you describe you as persuasive? Do you think you are persuasive enough?
