In business today, people judge us immediately based on how we are dressed, before we even get to say one word. Unfair? Yep! I run my own soft skills corporate training business in Tokyo. Every day I carefully choose my clothes to determine that so important first impression. How do you handle it?

This day I had my weekly Tokyo Rotary Club meeting at the Imperial Hotel in Hibiya. The Club members are all major Japanese business leaders and heavy hitters, so I need to be on point whenever I turn up there.

It was a warm summer day in Fall, which makes choosing the right outfit a difficulty. I went for my grey Brioni suit with a Prince of Wales check with a pale white overlay window pane pattern. The suit has a three roll on two buttoning arrangement with a Barchetta suit breast pocket, notch lapels, side vents, flap pockets and double cuffs, worn with over the calf grey socks.

The shirt is custom, Winchester style with white French Cuffs and white collar, and replicates the same Bengal blue and white stripe pattern that I previously bought and loved from Thomas Pink London. It wore out in the French Cuffs thanks to my watch on my left wrist. The collar stays are horn from Kirby Allison, the tie is from Etro tied with a double Windsor knot. Next time I might try a half-Windsor or a Four-in Hand knot to reduce the bulkiness of the tie. This tie was chosen to deal with the strong stripe in the shirt. The blue and white polka dot pocket square also provided a counter point to the strong Bengal stripe in the shirt.

The silver corporate badge from Dale Carnegie, the Rotary badge from Tokyo Rotary Club, the pen was my black and gold Mont Blanc, the business card holder from Lanvin, the watch my vintage rectangular 30mm Longines S30 EFCO with a black dial, stainless steel case and bracelet.

The high shine shoes were burgundy Adelaide Oxfords with a punched toe cap in vergano french calf leather from the D'Annonay tannery from the TLB Majorca Artista series with a Picasso last.

Burgundy is a good colour choice in many ways compared to brown, because it is more flexible and can be worn with a greater variety of business suit colours. The old saw, "No brown in Town" may or may not be relevant anymore, but burgundy skips right around that proviso completely.

This shot was taken outside my office in Akasaka.
