Fare Bella Figura - Make A Good Impression, Be A Sharp Dressed Man, Episode #110 (Video here:https://bit.ly/3YBE8zv)
In business today, people judge us immediately based on how we are dressed, before we even get to say one word. Unfair? Yep! I run my own soft skills corporate training business in Tokyo. Every day I carefully choose my clothes to determine that so important first impression. How do you handle it?
This day I attended a 200 plus guest networking event combining all the European Chambers of Commerce held at the Klimpton Shinjuku Hotel. This Hotel in Nishi-Shinjuuku was new to me. I met Maxime Hotelier, the General Manager and hit him up to come on my podcast Japan's Top Business Interviews and talk about his twenty years of experience leading in Japan. We both share unusual surnames, his highly appropriate for someone in the hospitality industry and mine for the training industry. I met a lot of folk I already knew and some new people as well, but sadly no potential clients. Win some, you lose some.
I knew it would be a gala affair, so how to stand out in that vast throbbing crowd was a conumdrum? I guessed that most guys would be in dark suits, so I opted for my custom light grey Bird's Eye pattern suit, with notch lapels, flap pockets, side vents, and double cuffs, wearing over the calf grey socks.
The custom striped shirt was a gift from my tailor and has an unusual pattern in a blue/grey and white combination. Finding a tie to go with that strongish stripe was not easy, because the stripe can overpower the tie quite easily. I went for my dark blue Chanel tie with a double Windsor knot, because it can absorb the strength of the stripe in the shirt. For the pocket square I went for a very dark blue with red edges and wore it as a reverse puff, so that the red edges would create some contrast with the grey suit and pick up the blue in the stripe.
The silver corporate badge from Dale Carnegie, the Rotary badge from Tokyo Rotary Club, the pen was my black and gold Mont Blanc, the business card holder from Lanvin, the watch my vintage rectangular 30mm Longines S30 EFCO with a black dial, stainless steel case and bracelet.
The high shine black Pollini Derbys had Balmoral stitching, which starts at the front and goes around the shoe to the rear, with a wingtip design and a Ram's Head on the Medallion.
The Mochizuki Room had a class running, so we took the shot outside my office in Akasaka.
