Fare Bella Figura - Make A Good Impression, Be A Sharp Dressed Man, Episode #127

In business today, people judge us immediately based on how we are dressed, before we even get to say one word. Unfair? Yep! I run my own soft skills corporate training business in Tokyo. Every day I carefully choose my clothes to determine that so important first impression. How do you handle it?

Know The Rule To Break The Rule: Classic Men's Wear Conventions

3. Don't perfectly match the tie colour with the pocket square colour e.g. red tie and the same red pocket square. Some stores sell them as a unit, but don't follow this guide. We can pair the tie and pocket square such that the colours are complementary, but not an exact match.

This day I had an interview with Aytekin Yildiz, President of Bel Japon for my podcast Japan's Top Business Interviews, a meeting with my Marketing Manager and a sales call with a client from the airline industry.

I wanted to look good on camera and for the sales call, so I went with my custom charcoal grey pinstripe suit, with notch lapels, side vents, flap pockets, Barretta breast pocket, and I wore over the calf grey socks. I wore a light pink white shirt by Thomas Pink London with French Cuffs to soften the strong burgundy tie, thinking a white shirt may have made too much of a contrast, the cufflinks were red in a stripe format to match the tie, which was a handmade Italian burgundy Shantung silk striped tie from Rampley & Co London, an Asaia muted red pocket square was held in place by my Kuska Fabric 1936 stabiliser.

The silver corporate badge from Dale Carnegie, the pen was my black and gold Mont Blanc, the business card holder from Lanvin, the watch my vintage gold 24m Cartier Tank Francaise with a black nubuck alligator strap.

The high shine shoes were TCB Majorca Artista series, Picasso last, burgundy Adelaide Oxfords with a punched toe cap in French calf leather from the D'Annonay tannery.

Outerwear

This is my Paris bargain Valentino camel colour cashmere double breasted overcoat with peak lapels, single vent at the back, flap pockets. I was in Paris on the way back to Osaka and wasn't looking to buy anything, but the saleswoman was very professional. She convinced me to buy this coat reduced from 5000 euro down to 3000 euro, even though I had already bought an Armani navy cashmere overcoat in Firenze, during my month long stay there, while studying Italian. Today, I am glad she was so professional. This coat will last longer than me and my son will receive it.
