I run my own soft skills training franchise business in Tokyo and many years ago, I decided to dress for success. Each day I consult my schedule and that day's work content drives my sartorial choices. Before I head out the door every day, I check myself in the mirror and ask, "Do I look like one of the most professional people in my industry".

This day I had two hours of online training for a multinational client for their APAC team. No time for lunch because this was immediately followed by an in person 55 minute keynote presentation on The Change Mindset for another multinational ciient for their APAC team, held at the Grand Nikko Daiba Hotel, on Odaiba Island in Tokyo Bay. I wanted a look which was authorative, but also welcoming and open. It has cooled off at last, so I knew I could go back to wearing a tie this day. Red ties and the usual strong power look I felt would have been too much, so I went for a strong blue and white striped tie to strike the right balance.

I chose my single breasted Tincati Milano navy suit with notch lapels, flap pockets, side vents and double cuffs, with over the calf navy socks. I bought this suit in Milano and had the trousers altered on the spot, which explains why the trouser break is a bit higher than I usally employ, following more the higher break Italian style. The suit has a very subtle blue window pane through it, to add a bit of interest to what, at a distance, just looks like another boring navy suit. Men's suits can all look very similar, which is why I always try and find some aspect which is recognisablly different up close, but not from a distance.

The white shirt was from Australian maker Aberlard. White of course, given I was both teaching and speaking. I have mentioned this before, but always avoid coloured shirts when presenting. If the room is hot under lights or you heat up during the talk, you get dark blotches on the coloured shirt and you look a mess. White shirts hide a lot of sins and sure enough, I was soaked underneath by the energy I pumped out during the talk. All safely hidden away under my jacket however, so only I knew what is going on and it was not obvious to the audience. I had French Cuffs and I wore blue cufflinks to match in with the tie. The pocket square in a puff format was a light blue and white polka dot pattern from Amanda Christensen from Sweden, chosen because it created a colour contrast with the strong blue and white striped tie from Hardy Amies London and the navy Tincati suit.

I completely forgot to put on my silver corporate badge was from Dale Carnegie in the morning as I raced out the door. The pen my black and gold Mont Blanc, the business card holder from Lanvin, the watch my reliable rectangular 30mm Longines S30 EFCO with a black dial, stainless steel case and bracelet.

The high shine shoes were black Derbys from Pollini, with a wingtip design, brogueing and a Ram's Head on the medallion.
