Fare Bella Figura - Make A Good Impression, Be A Sharp Dressed Man, Episode #70 (Video here:https://bit.ly/45rKvr5)
I run my own soft skills training franchise business in Tokyo and many years ago, I decided to dress for success. Each day I consult my schedule and that day's work content drives my sartorial choices. Before I head out the door every day, I check myself in the mirror and ask, "Do I look like one of the most professional people in my industry".
This day I had a sales meeting with a new client. I had met the President and now I was being dispatched to talk to the HR team. I also had another sales meeting with another new client, a storied brand, which has taken a few knocks over the last ten years, but still a powerful player. I visited my wife in hospital later that evening after my sales call.
I wanted to liven up the dark navy pinstripe suit with some colour in the pocketsquare and the cufflinks. I wanted to be understated but still dynamic for my sales calls.
It rained heavily all day so very humid in Tokyo and I opted to wear my Cooper Collar. This is a collar made famous by the actor Gary Cooper in the 1940s and 1950s and is especially designed to be worn without a tie. It allows the collar to sit high and firm and keeps its shape throughout the day.
I chose my Zegna navy subtle pinstripe suit, single breasted three roll on two buttoning, with notch lapels, side vents, a single pleat, double cuffs and over the calf blue socks. I have had this suit for many years and it continues to give good service. The white shirt is Custom with the Cooper Collar and French Cuffs. In fact, the only way to get a Cooper Collar shirt is custom, because they are complex to make and so not offered for ready to wear. The Fairfax pocketsquare is red and white in a reverse puff and I matched the cufflinks, which are also red.
Actually the cufflinks are interesting, in the shape of a maneki neko or welcoming cat. Many business establishments will have a small ceramic cat holding its right paw up in a beckoning motion inviting you to do business. Funnily enough, I bought these cufflinks in Hong Kong of all places and I have never seen them anywhere in Japan.
Rainy, humid days are bad for my Cartier Tank Francaise watch because it fogs up, so this day I wore my Longines 30mm C30 EFCO with a black dial, stainless steel rectangular case and bracelet, the pen is my gold and black Mont Blanc, silver corporate badge by Dale Carnegie, the business card holder by Lanvin.
The shoes are high shine, black Pollini brogue wingtip Oxfords with a decorative medallion, in calf skin leather, and five eyelets.
