Fare Bella Figura - Make A Good Impression, Be A Sharp Dressed Man, Episode #38 (Video here:https://bit.ly/3UA56p3)
I run my own soft skills training franchise business in Tokyo and many years ago, I decided to dress for success. Each day I consult my schedule and that day's work content drives my satorial choices. Before I head out the door every day, I check myself in the mirror and ask, "Do I look like one of the most professional people in my industry".
This day I had a breakfast networking event hosted by Dan Slater's Delphi Network at the Conrad Hotel, followed by lunch at the Tokyo American Club and then back to the office in Akasaka for the afternoon. What woud you choose to wear?
I wanted to look sharp for the networking, so I chose my blue window pane pattern, grey Brioni three button, single breasted, flap pockets, notch lapels with straight corners (English style), straight lapels (Italian style), Spalla Camica join at the sleeve head, folding the fabric underneath, so there is no rise in the shoulder joint, single pleat, double cuff, side vents, curved lower quarters (Italian style) suit. Some three button suits are often described as three-roll-two-buttons, when the top button is hidden under the roll of the lapel. In this case we use the middle button to fasten the jacket, although it is possible to close the upper button. Following the convention of the rotund English King Edward 7th who had a good appetite and could no longer close all of his suit buttons, the bottom button is now never closed. Amazing isn't it that men's suit decorum still follows this archaic rule, which is now over a hundred years old. The custom started in London in the early 1900s, and is still observed all around the men's sartorial world.
The light blue shirt was by Abelard, the collar stays are horn, the shirt has French cuffs and the large gold cufflinks which match the tie are interesting. They are in the shape of a Shachihoko or Shachi - a sea monster in Japanese folklore with the head of a dragon and the body of a carp. Nagoya Castle is famous for the many gold Shachi on the roof of the castle and these cufflinks were a gift from the Mayor when I worked in Nagoya.
The bright yellow silk tie I bought on a trip to Bangkok years ago and is by the famous Jim Thompson, who successfully promoted the Thai silk industry and is tied with my usual double Windsor knot. The gold colour pocketsquare is by Hermes Paris and instead of my usual three wave fold, I chose a reverse puff for a change. The watch was my Ostrich black strap, gold 22mm Cartier Tank Francaise and the corporate badge was Dale Carnegie. The shoes are high shine brown Camina Rain last cap toe five eyelet Oxfords with a swan neck design, using Vegano calfskin with the famous JR Redenbach oak bark tanned soles. JR Redenbach, where the leather is kept maturing in pits for a year and operating since 1871 sadly closed in 2021 and so these are shoes to be well taken care of. The socks were dark cream and over the calf length to save innocent bystanders from the sight of my hairy shins whenever I cross my legs.
I often refer to the Tokyo American Club in my posts, so today's photo is not in the Mochizuki Room at our Corporate HQ as usual, but in the Wintergarden at the Club.
