Fare Bella Figura - Make A Good Impression, Be A Sharp Dressed Man, Episode #36 (Video here:https://bit.ly/44kLc4E)
I run my own soft skills training franchise business in Tokyo and many years ago, I decided to dress for success. Each day I consult my schedule and that day's work content drives my satorial choices. Before I head out the door every day, I check myself in the mirror and ask, "Do I look like one of the most professional people in my industry".
This day I had a breakfast networking event with the Economist Intelligence Corporate Network (EICN) at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Roppongi Hills, my regular Tokyo Rotary Meeting at the Imperial Hotel in Hibiya, an Executive Coaching session and an American Chamber evening networking event at the PWC Offices in the Otemachi One Tower in Otemachi.
I wanted to stand out at the EICN event, because I knew it would be a big crowd and it is easy to get lost amongst all the dark suits. What would you choose?
I chose my Italian fabric custom cobolt blue single breasted suit, flap pockets, double cuff, double pleats, side vents, notch lapel (has a straight corner English style), pigstitching on the lapels which are straight (italian style) and curved lower quarters (Italian style). The shirt is also custom and the blue and white butchers stripe is very strong, with a white collar, white French Cuffs and horn collar stays from Kirby Allison. I needed a strong tie to match with the strong stripes, so I chose my Chanel dark blue tie and used my usual double Windsor knot. I matched this with my dark blue cufflinks. I wanted some contrast with all of this strong look, so I went with a lighter blue pocketsquare with my three wave fold.
This pocketsquare is actually my own repurposed creation. It is a piece of cotton fabric I bought in Kyoto. It has the series of circle patterns that represents the Zen gardens, where they rake the stones in ripples around the large rocks. It is quite bulky, which is actually handy because unlike silk pocketsquares, it doesn't move around at all. The badges were my Dale Carnegie corporate badge and my Tokyo Rotary badge. The watch was my black crocodile strap, simple black 32 mm dial Gucci. The shoes were black, high shine Pollini calfskin cap toe, four eyelet Derbys with a Ram's Head brogue design and the socks were blue and over the calf length, so no danger of hairy shins being exposed in public.
Derbys are good for me because I have a broad foot with a high instep. The way to tell it is a Derby and not an Oxford, is there are extra flaps of leather on the vamp or front of the shoe and this is where the eyelets are created to run the laces. Oxford shoes will just have the leather of the vamp penetrated with holes to allow the laces to be threaded. I don't go for them myself, but the another common type is the single or double monk strap variety, which has extra leather pulled around the side of the shoe and uses buckles as replacements for the laces.
