Fare Bella Figura - Make A Good Impression, Be A Sharp Dressed Man, Episode #35 (Video here:https://bit.ly/3QJbnNd )
I run my own soft skills training franchise business in Tokyo and many years ago, I decided to dress for success. Each day I consult my schedule and that day's work content drives my satorial choices. Before I head out the door every day, I check myself in the mirror and ask, "Do I look like one of the most professional people in my industry".
This day I had a networking event for the British Chamber, a podcast interview for Japan's Top Business Interviews with Tim O'Rourke, the Country Manager for Meltwater, lunch at the Tokyo American Club, a new client meeting at our office in Akasaka, another podcast interview with Christian Mecker President of Bosch Mobility for East and South Asia, some work back at the office and then another networking event for Dan Slater's Delphi Network at the Anzdaz Hotel. What outfit would you choose?
I wanted to look sharp for all of the day and evening events and the podcast interviews, so I went with my grey custom bird's eye pattern single breasted suit, with flap pockets, double cuffs, double pleats, side vents, kissing buttons on the sleeve which work, notch lapels with a straight corner (English style), and straight lapels (Italian style), pigstiching on the lapels and curved quarters at the bottom (Italian style). The fabric was from Vitale Barberia Italy. The shirt was also a custom blue and white butcher's stripe with a white collar, with horn collar stays and white French Cuffs. I originally bought this same shirt from Thomas Pink, but my watch has shredded the French Cuff of the left side, so I can't wear it anymore. I do like that fresh blue and white stripe combination, so I asked my tailor to make me a new one.
The blue cufflinks matched the blue in the shirt. The light blue tie was from Barneys New York, with my usual double Windsor knot. The pocketsquare was a strong blue from Etro to create some contrast with the light coloured suit and tie. The corporate badge from Dale Carnegie. The watch was my gold Versace with the Medusa motif and the custom cobolt blue Nubuck Alligator strap for Jean Rousseau. The shoes were black high shine wingtip brogue calfskin Derbys from Pollini and grey knee length socks to keep my hairy shins under control.
