I run my own soft skills training franchise business in Tokyo and many years ago, I decided to dress for success. Each day I consult my schedule and that day's work content drives my satorial choices. Before I head out the door every day, I check myself in the mirror and ask, "Do I look like one of the most professional people in my industry".

This day I had my online presentation on doing sales in Japan, followed by an interview with a candidate for a sales job with us. I knew I would be wearing my jacket for the online presentation, rather than in just in a shirt and tie. I wanted to overcome resistance from this tough salesperson audience, so I went for a strong, authorative look, so definitely keeping the jacket on for this one.

Trust me, salespeople are the most sceptical audience you will ever encounter, especially when you are presenting about how to sell in Japan. You know you are going to hit heavy resistance to your message, because they are so confident in doing things their own way.

For the sales candidate interview, I do the reverse and take the power down by always removing my jacket to help the Japanese candidates relax. I did my best to present a totally honest picture of what he would be getting himself into if he joins the training industry post Covid, so if he agrees to the final interview, it means he is serious.

I chose my custom grey single breasted suit, with a broad light blue stripe through it, the wool material is woven by Marling & Evans in England, double pleats, double cuff, side vents. This suit has a strong rope shoulder and combined with the broad light blue stripe in the suit, it gives the impression that you are very broad in the shoulders and this projects physical power and strength. I chose a plain white Abelard shirt with French Cuffs and horn collar stays.

Whenever I am presenting, I always choose a plain white shirt to avoid any two tone colour variations which you can get with a coloured shirt, if you start to heat up. You perspire and your collar goes a darker colour than the rest of the shirt and this distracts the audience from your message.

The white shirt also forms a marked contrast with a strong red tie, to project authority, credibility and power. "Hey you salespeople - don't argue with me, okay!", type of messaging. Thomas Pink strong red and blue striped tie with a double Windsor knot and red striped cufflinks to match, the pocket square is red polka dots by Fairfax, with my three wave fold. The dot pattern is to contrast with the red stripe in the tie. Having stripes in both the pocketsquare and the tie is boring to me, so I always look for some contrast and variety. The corporate badge is Dale Carnegie and the watch is my black strap Cartier Tank Francaise. The shoes are black high shine Derbys by Polllini.

Would the people who know you or meet you describe you as persuasive? Do you think you are persuasive enough? Persuasion power is the most important, but the most commonly lacking skill in the business world. Do it yourself trial and error wastes time and resources. It is time to change things up and get that key skill.? There is a perfect solution for you- to LEARN MORE click here (https://bit.ly/3VhvR2B )
