Fare Bella Figura - Make A Good Impression, Be A Sharp Dressed Man Episode #27 (Video here:https://bit.ly/3xAk3yu)
I run my own soft skills training franchise business in Tokyo and many years ago, I decided to dress for success. Each day I consult my schedule and that day's work content drives my satorial choices. Before I head out the door every day, I check myself in the mirror and ask, "Do I look like one of the most professional people in my industry". Here is a good question to ponder: do I dress well because I am the President or am I the President because I chose to start dressing well?
This day I had a meeting with a long established global manufacturing client to introduce the new person from our side, who would be taking care of their account management. After the meeting, I took my colleague to lunch at the Tokyo American Club, where as usual I met clients there, which is why I go there so often. In the afternoon I had my third meeting with a big global insurance company. I had previously met an executive from their firm at a networking event and he introduced me to their HR person. The client told me we had won the competition for their training business, so that brightened up my afternoon considerably. That evening I attended the Tokyo Digital Marketers Meetup.
I wanted to project energy and vitality to my clients this day, so I chose my custom summer blue suit with double cuffs and double pleats. I also wanted to be approachable for the Meetup event, given most of the attendees are young, in their twenties and thirties. Again, I was the only one wearing a suit.
The custom shirt has a white collar and white French cuffs and a blue and white summer stripe. It goes well with the strong blue in the suit and helps brings down the suits temperature. I paired it with a T.M. Lewin light blue tie with my usual double Windsor knot. The pocketsquare is by Paul Stuart and is a large silk square with four different patterns on it. I chose the pattern which was plain and a light blue to match the blue stripe in the shirt, with my preferred three wave fold. The cufflinks were light blue to match the tie and the watch my Cartier Tank Francaise with a black strap. The shoes were black high shine Pollini Oxfords.
