Why a Frequently Asked Question Issue?

There are a large number of new followers so I thought I would take the opportunity to answer the most frequent questions that I get asked. Please let me know if there is anything else on your mind. If you are thinking it I guarantee others are as well.

Do you really hate corporate?

I hate what corporate has become, especially for experienced and successful professionals. It is 100% a numbers game focused on command and control. If you are a GenXer I can’t imagine a scenario where micro management makes any sense. I think the pandemic accelerated this shift. If I can’t see you working you must not be working.?

It is such a one way street that it only makes sense for the corporation and not the individual. The good thing is you have opportunities to take back your independence and control.

Can I really replace my income using my corporate skills?

100% yes and by working fewer hours! Small and midsize businesses are hungry for your expertise and are willing to pay just for your knowledge and experience. If for example, you chose to start by providing fractional leadership, you could replace your corporate income in 2-3 days per week (that is working for 2 clients).?

I also believe in monetizing in multiple ways so you can build a solo business on how, when and where you want to work!

There are a number of different data sources and previous issue of the newsletter I went deep on the ROI of fractional and other escapee revenue streams.

Do I have to know how to sell?

Absolutely not! You need to reframe this process from “selling” to problem solving. The core of what I teach is to become a problem solver. FYI, you are already doing this in your corporate job.

If you approach it as solving a problem for your ideal customer, they will understand that there is a price to pay to solve the problem. One of the keys is to identify and focus on problems that your prospects “need” to solve vs. a “nice” to solve problem. You will have to work harder on the nice to solve problems.

What about insurance?

The number one concern for folks addicted to the corporate benefits. Ironically, many companies are paying less and less of your premiums. I am not going to sugar coat it because it is still my largest monthly expense.

The good news is it is getting easier to find solutions and depending on your state you can receive discounted rates if you are an entrepreneur. Plus, we are close with some companies being able to provide group rates for solo business owners.?

Do I need a website?

Not to get started. The beauty of the escapee business model is that you do not need very many customers so your network and referrals will drive a large number of your deals.?

If you are focusing on high end consulting, a highly technical skill or even design where you have a portfolio, you may want to consider a simple site to showcase your work but it is NOT a requirement.

Your LinkedIn profile should be enough in most cases. I would recommend creating a couple of thought leadership pieces. These could be checklists, frameworks or even recommended best practices. This will help you showcase your expertise by providing value.
