The FANTOM project started in the year 2000 to annotate the function of the mammalian genomes using full-length cDNA technology at first, followed later by Cap-Analysis Gene Expression (CAGE). We have summarized discoveries in the past 16 years of this formidable international consortium, finishing with a perspective on FANTOM6 and the large scale screening for function of lncRNAs. The video also emphasizes the importance of broad international collaborations.
