Fantasy: Internet to Bodynet
Whenever someone attempts to predict the future, fantasy often reigns supreme in their assumptions. Despite any rationality that might be applied, these predictions are still just hypotheses—fantasies sanctioned by logic. From time immemorial, humans have indulged in such fantasies, driven by an innate curiosity to know what tomorrow holds. Yet, more often than not, we discover just how inept our brains are at truly perceiving the future. As Karl Marx aptly put it, "Existence conditions consciousness." We are products of our surroundings and our upbringing, not of some distant future.
For example, at the end of the 19th century, if someone had predicted that within the next hundred years, people would be flying in aircraft capable of lifting thousands of passengers at a time, traveling at speeds of 1,000 miles per hour across the globe, or that we would be able to watch events occurring in one part of the world simultaneously on small screens (TVs) across the world, it would have been met with laughter. Rational attitudes of the time could never have fathomed the magnitude of these future realities.
The Role of Fantasy in Shaping the Future
Despite this inherent uncertainty, we continue to paint visions of the future, understanding that today's fantastical ideas might become tomorrow's reality. Throughout human history, ideas and thoughts that once seemed irrational or impossible have often found their way into our collective consciousness. Concepts once dismissed have become integral to our lives. The evolution of cricket from a British pastime to a multi-billion-dollar industry in India, or the replacement of 1950s mainframe computers by laptops that are 1,000 times faster, exemplifies how cultural and technological shifts can reshape the world in unexpected ways.
The only way to describe this transformation is the word "fantastic" in its literal sense. So, what does the future hold for us in terms of our social structures and daily lives?
Most present-day visions of the future rely heavily on advancements in information technology. I believe that this extensive, information-mediated world will initially bring the world closer together, eventually leading to the constriction of large governmental and corporate structures. This, in turn, may pave the way for the world to be divided into smaller city-states, as depicted in many science fiction movies.

From my perspective, the world is moving towards an intrinsic augmented human network—what I call the "Bodynet." In this future, technology will be seamlessly integrated into our physical selves, leading to profound changes in how we live, work, and interact with our surroundings.
The Uncertain Journey Ahead
As we continue to push the limits of technology, we must grapple with the potential consequences of augmenting our senses and bodies. While today's advancements promise a more connected and efficient world, they also raise important questions about the long-term implications for humanity. Will the continuous enhancement of our abilities lead to a better future, or will it push us toward a point where our flesh-and-blood existence is no longer sufficient?
Though our predictions are often flawed, they are essential to our progress, guiding us as we navigate the unknown. As we stand on the brink of unprecedented technological change, we must remain both cautious and curious, embracing the fantastical while staying grounded in the reality of the present.
