Fans Chant ‘Sell the Team’—Here’s Why They Could

“Sell the Team…. Sell the Team…”

The Chants echoed throughout Soldiers Field this past Boxing Day by a fan base frustrated by decades of ineptitude and a Chicago Bears team losing its 11th straight game after winning their first 4 of 6 games.

And the Chicago Bears could find buyers willing to pay over $1 billion tomorrow in a heartbeat.

And Why?

Because the Chicago Bears are the definition of a sellable business.

  1. Profitable and Growing: The Bears have diverse streams of recurring revenue—from massive TV contracts and merchandise sales to subscriptions and ticket sales. These are income sources that don’t depend on the team’s performance on the field. The business thrives, even when the team doesn’t.
  2. Differentiation: They own the Chicago market. No other NFL team comes close geographically, and they are one of a handful of original, blue-chip franchises in the globally famous NFL. That brand value alone is priceless.
  3. Cash Flow: The Bears are cash-flow positive year after year. Even during losing seasons, the money flows in, making them a financially stable asset.
  4. Not Dependent on the Owners: The owners don’t need to coach, play, or even be visible for the Bears to function. The business runs itself.
  5. Not Dependent on One Key Person or Partner: While they rely on the NFL as a whole, the Bears don’t depend on any single customer, supplier, or employee. Coaches come and go. Players change every season. The business remains rock solid.

The Bears are the perfect case study of what makes a business sellable. And the chants from Soldier Field should remind you: when a business is profitable, growing, and independent, it’s never far from a lucrative sale.
