Famous Men and Their Eyeglasses

Throughout history, glasses have been a symbol of sophistication and intelligence. For some famous men, they are also synonymous with their public persona. From iconic playwrights to stylish musicians, here are four types of glasses that famous men ever tried and make their signature look.

Round Eyeglasses

  • First we will talk about Benjamin Franklin, an esteemed founding father of the United States, Benjamin Franklin truly was a man capable of doing it all. His repertoire spanned from physicist and inventor to printer, author, humorist and activist - an amazing feat for one individual! Even with his many accomplishments, there was but one thing that he could not do - push up his eyeglasses.
  • Harry Potter, I believe you know him, the famous schoolboy protagonist of J.K Rowling's bestselling stories and movies captivated audiences with his trademark glasses and brave spirit. When we think about him, the image of Harry is with round eyeglasses.
  • Takashi Murakami: With his almost imperceptible wire-rimmed glasses, the Japanese pop artist continues to make a splash in collaborations with Louis Vuitton, Kanye West and Kid Cudi. Unsurprisingly then, he aptly named his first movie Jellyfish Eyes.

Black Frames

Do you know some famous men with black frames? We all know black frames are the best styles for us and that everyone could look good in them.

  • Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and one of the wealthiest philanthropists on Earth, appears to lack an adventurous impulse when it comes to his eyewear. He is often seen wearing either black or tortoiseshell acrylic rectangular frames – though he has been known to surprise us with a pair of rimless glasses from time to time.

  • Famed '50s rocker Buddy Holly, who tragically passed away at just 22 years old after a plane crash, still lives on in his timeless songs and unique style - particularly the iconic thick black rectangular eyeglasses that are now synonymous with him.
  • Martin Scorsese is famously renowned for bringing the chaotic streets of New York to life with his films, but visually he's most recognized by his signature warm grin and bold glasses featuring rectangular lenses that flawlessly contrast against his round nose.
  • Peter Sellers was known for his comedic movie roles, but he had an affinity for his substantial black Wayfarer sunglasses.
  • Orville Redenbacher, the iconic popcorn genius, demonstrated that it's merely a myth to believe you need to constantly change your look. He made his signature bow-ties and suspenders recognizable through print media, as well as his white wavy locks coupled with black Ray-Bans sunglasses.

Wire Frame

  • The renowned early 19th century Viennese classical composer of divine masses, Franz Schubert, was often seen wearing mini oval wire-rims. An ardent admirer of Beethoven, he reportedly asked for his String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor to be played on the day before he passed away.
  • Elvis Presley: In the '50s, his rock and roll moves had fans swooning; later on, however, he became known for his obsession with gold-rimmed double-bridge aviators and white studded jumpsuits. Although iconic blue suede shoes were part of Elvis's look at one time--and still a common image associated with him today--they weren't around much in his later life.
  • Jerry Garcia, eternally associated with groovy tie-dye clothing, was known to don plain black T-shirts and wire aviator sunglasses.

Monocles

  • The German philosopher, historian and economist Karl Marx profoundly disrupted the capitalist system - this resulted in revolutionary movements, executions of royalty, communism and eventually the Cold War. Initially wearing a monocle was befitting his status as an intellectual; yet later on it seemed to conflict with his progressive views.
  • Alfred, Lord Tennyson:?A well-heeled 19th-century poet? Why, of course, his look would be completed with a dapper monocle.
