Family Workcations: Experiencing Diversity, Love, and a Drag Brunch in Miami!
Workcations from Not the HR Lady
We're transforming boring remote work & work travel into culture building and wellness inducing self-care Workcations!
Work travel. It conjures up images of staid hotel rooms, formal business meetings, and hastily consumed meals in anonymous restaurants. But what if we could change that narrative? What if we could transform work travel into immersive, educational, and enriching experiences for the entire family? At Workcations, that's exactly what we aim to do.
My recent-ish work trip brought me to the vibrant city of Miami, a place renowned for its strong and thriving LGBTQ+ community. As a parent, I saw this as an ideal opportunity to educate my kids about different cultures and communities, and boy, was it an adventure!
Amid business meetings and client catch-ups, we found ourselves at a drag brunch. Yes, you heard that right. Glittering costumes, lip-synced performances, and the most vivacious personalities you could imagine. It was spectacular, but more importantly, it was an opportunity to educate my children about diversity, acceptance, and the joy of simply being yourself. Plus... dancing, and they LOVE to dance.
As we sipped on our orange juices and dug into our eggs benedict, we talked about the importance of love and acceptance (over the loud music), about the LGBTQ+ community, and about the struggles they’ve had to endure for acceptance. We explained to them that love is love, regardless of gender, and that it’s okay to express oneself openly and authentically.
Our drag brunch wasn't just a meal; it was an education. It was a chance for our kids to engage with a world outside their usual environment and to understand that difference isn't something to fear but rather, something to celebrate.
Miami, with its rainbow flags flying high and its vibrant LGBTQ+ community, was the perfect backdrop for these discussions. The city itself is a testament to diversity, with people from all walks of life living, working, and thriving together. This rich tapestry of experiences and identities added a layer of depth to our Workcation that simply can't be replicated in a classroom or a book.

Traveling with kids on work trips can be challenging, there’s no denying that. But the rewards far outweigh the difficulties. Not only does it allow us to maintain work-life balance, but it also provides a platform for experiential learning.
Teaching our kids through travel and talk allows us to instill in them a sense of curiosity, empathy, and open-mindedness. It helps us raise global citizens who are not only aware of the world around them but are also eager to learn from it and respect its diversity.
So, next time you're packing your suitcase for a work trip, consider turning it into a Workcation. Take your family along, explore the local culture, support local LGBTQ businesses, and use the opportunity to educate your children about the world.
Workcations aren't just about maintaining a balance between your professional commitments and your personal life. They're about blurring the lines, about transforming work travel into enriching experiences, about raising our kids to be empathetic, open-minded individuals.
Here’s to more Workcations, more learning, and more drag brunches in our future! ??? ??
