A Family Milestone, an Unexpected Conversation, and the Importance of Medicare Education

A Family Milestone, an Unexpected Conversation, and the Importance of Medicare Education

The day my second granddaughter, McKenna, was born was a moment I’ll never forget. Our family gathered at the hospital, filled with excitement and joy. Watching my three-year-old granddaughter, Haven, meet her new little sister for the first time, surrounded by the two proud grandmas, was priceless. I’d left the office early that day, right after a team session breaking down our quarterly earnings call. We discussed how our Medicare Supplement team could continue supporting Humana’s performance—a reminder of how our daily work impacts real lives.

But as it turned out, my workday wasn’t quite over yet. While sitting in the waiting room, wearing my Humana shirt, I struck up a conversation with a gentleman who noticed my logo and asked what I did for Humana. I shared how I’m part of a passionate team supporting our Medicare Supplement product, and to my surprise, he knew exactly what that meant—he had joined another carrier a few years back and held a Plan G policy.?

What surprised me even more was what he said next. His wife, who was currently hospitalized, would be turning 65 soon, and he was starting to explore her Medicare options. I was glad to reassure him about his coverage and provide some insight into the various Humana Medicare Supplement products, including our household discounts that might be helpful for them. I encouraged him to reach out to his insurance broker to get a full picture of his wife’s options here in Tennessee. As I often remind people, health insurance is a very personal choice—one you should feel confident in.

Before we parted, he mentioned he’d likely reach out again as his wife’s Open Enrollment Period approached. We exchanged emails, and I headed back to see my family and meet my new granddaughter, McKenna.

Reflecting on that day, I’m reminded that these conversations can happen anywhere—sometimes when we least expect them. Moments like these underscore why I’m so proud to be part of the Medicare space. By connecting with others and answering questions, we have the opportunity to make a real impact.

Happens all of the time. I joined a Medicare conversation in progress at the dog park today. One of the dog owners is a broker and she has become the go-to for a lot of the people who have gotten to know her there. Every one went from uncomfortable about Medicare to comfortable because of her. When a broker does it right they help people. Let's keep paying brokers. Why? Because HER customers are FAR less likely to misunderstand their coverage, disenroll, be lured to switch, or file frivolous grievances.
