Family of four displaced by fire, water damage to Florida home

It is a little less than a three-hour drive southeast of Tampa to find yourself in St. Lucie County. The area is home to the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum and other points of interest, as well as to a family of four that recently made an unexpected entry into the local news.

According to a short newspaper article, the family's house recently caught fire. Most of the fire damage was in the living room, while much of the rest of the structure sustained water damage from firefighting efforts. The result of the accidental blaze is that the family is displaced.

The news report indicates that a male resident was home at the time and using a heat gun, which apparently ignited the fire. Investigators said that they determined that the fire was accidental.

No one was injured in the incident.

So it's not a big deal, right? Right. Unless, of course, the family later finds out that their insurance company is balking at covering the cost of repairs.

The news report said that damage is estimated in the $30,000 to $40,000 range. We do not know how this family's insurer will react to a claim, but we do know that in too many similar cases homeowners find a legitimate claim for an unfortunate accident is rejected.
