FAMILY COURTS IN THE VIRTUAL AGE

When COVID 19 hit, it sent shockwaves across all institutions and changed the way everyday things were done. The court system was forced to face COVID 19 head on.
Courts are a vital part of our communities and allow our citizens to handle their disputes in what is perceived as a fair and trustworthy manner. The courts are forced to deal with a myriad of issues, and many of those issues became exacerbated once the pandemic hit. Those issues included housing, unemployment, familial disputes, domestic violence, substance abuse, and many others. Though in person appearances were no longer permitted for the most part, the courts immediately put into place a system to try to handle its daily responsibilities and balance the risks created by the pandemic. But it was not such a smooth and easy transition to do so.
ACCESS TO JUSTICE
A well-respected Judge used a quote at a discussion I recently attended. She said “While we all may be in the same storm; we are not all in the same boat”. And this is true of our communities. The pandemic quickly showed us that not everyone has access to the court system if they do not have a physical court to go to
