Falsified qualifications in mining sector

The News Alert below was published by DMIRS on the 15th February 2022.

This has been an issue that has troubled me for as long as I can remember... I wish that people in my network would realise just how easy it is for those with different ethical standards to copy and edit your happy posts showing off your hard-won qualifications.

Please remember - we all like to celebrate your achievements with you - but when posting copies of your qualifications or certificates of achievement you don't have to publish the whole certificate ... this simply opens the door to the nefarious characters out there to copy your photograph and insert their name instead of yours.

My experience - over many years - is that this is much more widespread than you might expect!

HR and recruitment professionals - please be alert to this!

Falsified qualifications identified in mining sector

WorkSafe Mines Safety is reminding employers to carefully assess the validity of training competencies and qualifications, even if they appear to be from recognised Nationally Accredited Training organisations, after discovering falsified certificates and falsified trainer credentials in the Emergency Response sector of the mining industry. In addition, the department has also recently been made aware of falsified certificates of competency in the underground sector.

Training certificates listing national competencies are only issued to workers who have been appropriately trained and assessed as competent to perform tasks and activities safely.

Employers must develop and maintain safe systems of work to ensure that employees are provided with information, instruction and training to enable them to perform their work in a manner that they are not exposed to hazards.

Anyone who has concerns about the validity of training certificates can verify the details by contacting the training provider that issued the certificate or by contacting DMIRS for further advice.

It is important to note when the department identifies fraud in relation to training competencies and qualifications, these cases are referred to the Australian Skills and Quality Authority and the Western Australian Police.

Thanks Martin for calling this fraudulent behaviour out, we have been doing the same within the industry, a solid process for verifying documents is required to mitigate this risk to operational safety! To me, that doesn't mean asking an already fully engaged support person to 'have a look at them' and make a decision! #verification #ownersrisk #mitigationstrategies
