A 2% decline in malware attacks in Europe in 2023 may suggest the start of a decline. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. Despite a decline in Europe and Asia, the number of malware attacks surged for the first time since 2019, peaking at 6.06 billion incidents reported in 2023.
Perhaps this demonstrates that other countries, such as America, are easier for cybercriminals to target or that cybercriminals in Asia and Europe are looking at alternative methods to malware. It's possible that the reduced attack frequency in Europe is a result of cybercriminals shifting their focus towards leveraging AI to develop more potent malware, prioritising the impact of their attacks over the sheer volume.
Worrying Signs
A 2% decline in malware attacks might suggest an overall reduction, yet not all sectors have been fortunate enough to experience this downturn.
Alarmingly, malware attacks increased by 20% in the healthcare and retail sectors during this time frame. Additionally, local governments were particularly hard hit, with malware incidents surging by 38% in 2023.
The statistics are even more concerning for businesses in the financial sector, which emerged as the most heavily targeted by malware attacks last year.
