Is Being "Photogenic" Really A Thing?
What's the truth behind this myth?
Every new client that walks into my headshot studio says essentially the same thing: "I'm not photogenic so good luck getting a good photo of me."
It's frustrating to hear that because being photogenic is not about looks, size, or anything else most of us are self-conscious about. We're all placed in a physical form with the sole purpose of putting our thoughts into actions. That makes our physical form perfect and whatever it looks like is completely irrelevant.
Being photogenic is not a state of being that you either have or don't. None of us are born more or less suited to be photographed than anyone else.
"Being photogenic" is a false term. What makes a person appear to fit the common definition of "photogenic"? It's the result of a successful collaboration between a photographer and subject that captures the true spirit and energy of that subject, reflecting the best version of them at that precise moment in time.

That means we are all "photogenic". People just believe they aren't because they've never worked with a photographer, whether a professional or a friend using an iPhone, that allowed them to feel comfortable and confident enough in front of their camera to create an authentic image.
You are your biggest asset and nobody can represent what is unique about you better than you. And it's critically important that you effectively communicate what you have to offer in your headshot. That headshot you post on social media and on your website is often times what people use to decide whether or not to contact you for your services. To not represent yourself at your best is a disservice your career.
Don't let the "photogenic" myth stop you from representing yourself visually as the capable and competent professional you've worked so hard to become. Take a few minutes to check out the work of some local professional headshot photographers. If you like what you see and read, give them a call. Let them know your concerns and see how they react. If you feel like you connect, you've probably found someone who can prove you really are "photogenic"!
