False Expectations

Out of the Blue

The call came in as I had just finished getting some bad health news. But I grew up in an age when you did not just let a phone ring.

There was no caller I D. Texting was not even a possibility. The phone was wired into the wall.

So you answered when it rang.

I was on remote control, programmed to pick up.

An acquaintance I had not heard from in at least 10 years was on the line. He gave me a quick brief on his reason for calling and I agreed to help. I recapped the multiple difficulties I was enduring to become the bionic man and suggested that we should talk at length after the holidays.

30 minutes later.

I just wanted to go snuggle in on the couch and rest but he wanted to tell me about the extended illness of his significant other. He even rolled out a compliment of me that she had made 15 years ago.

Responses are measured.

My lack of a significant reaction hit a nerve in a person I now see was deep in grief. His expectations of me were clearly not met. I received one of the most excoriating e-mails of my life later that day. This loving, gentle man was enraged at what he saw as an egotistical lack of empathy.

Be careful what you hope for.

People on both sides of a conversation need to reign in their anticipations. I expected someone that had empathy for my discomfort. He assumed that I would be as grieved as he was. Clearly we were on different pages. Looking back I’m pretty sure we may have been in different books.

The Takeaways:

1.??? Check your expectations at the door.

2.??? If you are not getting the reaction you expected ask why.

3.??? Never assume.
