?

Falling once doubles our chances of falling again. ?One out of five falls causes a severe injury, such as broken bones (fractures) or concussion to the head and loss of quality of life in most cases (CDC). ?

?

The age-related deterioration of CV and breathing capacity, muscle strength (sarcopenia), visual acuity (vision), hearing, and other comorbidities drastically increase the risk of falls.?

?

Potential cause:

  • Facilitated biological aging of brain and legs
  • Sedentary lifestyle- Difficulties with stretching, walking, and balance
  • Suboptimal Blood pressure and SAP variability and sudden heart attack and stroke etc.
  • Throw (area) rugs, footpads, or clutter that can make tripping easier.
  • Suboptimal light in hallways, bathrooms, and stairs.
  • Home hazards or dangers such as: Broken or uneven steps, and Throw (area) rugs, footpads, or clutter that can make tripping easier.
  • Lower body weakness- Sarcopenia (loss of muscle) and loss of balance and strength
  • Polypharmacy- Use of medicines, such as tranquilizers, sedatives, antidepressants, sleeping pills, and BP-lowering medications.
  • Vision problems.
  • Planter fasciitis, ankle injuries, Foot pain, or poor footwear and excess body weight
  • Suboptimal exposure to sun and possibly Vitamin D deficiency
  • Suboptimal nutrition of >100 trillion gut microbiota
  • MCI and other neurologic diseases, dizziness, delirium, etc.

·?????? People, especially seniors living with osteoarthritis or atherosclerosis, obesity, diabetes, taking BP lowering and sleep medications, or taking multiple medications and dietary supplements, have a very high risk of falls, fractures or concussions, poor quality of living, and premature deaths following a fall in the bathrooms and bedrooms or stairs at night or early morning. ?

?

Why worry: Falls Are Serious and Costly (CDC)

  • One out of five falls causes a severe injury, such as broken bones or a head injury.4,5
  • Each year, 3 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries.6
  • Over 800,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture.6
  • Each year, at least 300,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures.7
  • More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling,8?usually by falling sideways.9
  • Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI).10
  • In 2015, the medical costs for falls totaled more than $50 billion.11?Medicare and Medicaid shouldered 75% of these costs.

?

Note: Using Alexa or AI in the bathrooms, toilets, stairs, etc., may help better than the current ineffective approaches if the senior is lucky not to sustain a significant concussion or fracture.?

?

How AI and robots can help the aging population (>70 million) in their homes, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes.?

Here are two case studies (Dr. Thomas Lewis) .

My father was on blood pressure medications and had dementia. In his state, he needed adequate blood pressure to support his deteriorating brain. One night, he got out to use the bathroom. Confused, he took a "right" at the top of the stairs rather than a "left" into the bathroom. He fell down the stairs and slammed his head into the door at the bottom. My mother had managed to care for him at home, but after this fall, his confusion and violence increased dramatically. She had no choice but to put him in a care facility (VA). He was dead in 1 month.

?

A client had diabetes and was put on what I call the circle of drugs: statins, insulin, metformin, and blood pressure medications. He told me he didn't even have high blood pressure. However, these scripts are the standard of care that protects doctors. We eventually got him off all the drugs. This took nine months. When he had his next checkup with his on-site clinic doctor (whom I, at one point, respected), he was put back on all meds because his A1C was "high." However, his glucose, fasting insulin, lipids, and triglycerides were significantly reduced, and he was no longer considered diabetic. I recommended he no longer use the on-site doctor and switch to Dr. Austin, which he did. My wellness contract with the company was NOT renewed. An insider told me that the reason was my referral of participants away from the on-site clinic.

?

Summary of the cases:

1.??? Dad's confusion was exacerbated by the BP meds, leading to his sudden death.

2.??? The client did NOT have high blood pressure but was put on the drug anyway. (Why did he cede to this recommendation - doctors put pressure on patients to take polypharmacy). He retired shortly thereafter and kept in touch with me. His daily state of well-being significantly improved off the polypharmacy.

?

Potential remedies:

Avoid unnecessary medications, alcohol, and dietary supplements and their ADEs. ?Most people cannot figure out what is needed (essential) medicine and what is excess.

Falls prevention: first, we need to recognize the comorbidities and risk factors and, where possible, take preventive action to reduce the risks:

·????? Improve the body’s balance (2,3,7).

·????? Optimize breathing (4)

·????? Optimize gut microbiota nutrition and growth- Plant-based mild laxative foods rich in fiber, Mg, anthocyanins, and Ayurvedic cooking.

·????? Adopt gentle yogic practices or Aquatic yoga (1) to improve the rebuilding of the muscles, circulation, peripheral nerves, and lymphatics resilience and

·????? Meao Mudra and meditation to restore normal blood pressure without medications (more clinical research is needed).

ADRxSynergy may be applied to the joints and fasciae to tame the chronic inflammation.
