Fall: A Season for Change

Fall has always been my favorite time of year. It's a natural bridge from the hot, smoky summer to the winter ahead. It’s a time of transformation—a theme echoed in literature, poetry, and art. The landscapes around us shift, reminding me of the beauty in change. I even got married in October twenty years ago because I love this season so much. (And despite being an avid hunter, my husband graciously agreed!)
As the quote goes: “The trees are about to show us how lovely it is to grow in a new direction.” Instead of seeing fall as a season of loss—of green leaves, warm weather, and vacations—there’s an opportunity to view it as a time of growth and new possibilities.
As a long-time member of Vistage Worldwide, Inc. , I’m continually learning about leadership, my blind spots, and how our personal and professional lives intertwine in all we do. In a recent Vistage session, led by Ken Stibler , we discussed leading in a VUCA world (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) and how critical it is to guide teams through change.
Having led a team through the pandemic (to name an obvious example), I’ve seen firsthand the different ways people react to change, whether small or significant. The ability to navigate uncertainty isn’t just an executive skill—it’s crucial for employees at every level.
I believe organizations need to cultivate change management and comfort with ambiguity as core competencies. Building this culture among current employees, before hiring new talent, sets a strong foundation for managing change openly and effectively.
How do you cope with VUCA in your workplace? What strategies do you use to support your team through uncertainty?

4 个月Karianne Fallow you have identified two skills that are vital for organizations and people: change readiness and being able to act even though things are ambiguous. It's a journey daily! Being able to paint a vision for what success looks like and acknowledging we'll adapt as we learn more are ideas that can be helpful. I spent a beautiful day on the golf course today -- the fall colors were far more inspirational than my score!
