Fall is the F Word

Fall is the F Word // 14 September 2023

?A lady I knew a long time ago once suggested that fall is truly the “F word.”? Although she didn’t think she suffered from Seasonal Affective Disorder, she certainly did not enjoy the fall. There are lots of reasons not to do so.

The beaches are closed.? Yes, the beaches are still there but the lifeguards are back at school and the water temperature declines rapidly through the month of September.? I have never gone swimming later than Columbus Day and then it was a bracing experience. Snack stands are closed. It is all part of the annual seasonal evolution that we have come to acknowledge.

The days get shorter very quickly.? The ability to do things outside diminishes. We all wear more clothes; it takes more time especially for children and handicapped people to put on layer after layer. We all know the phenomenon of wearing something in the morning and not needing it in the afternoon.

The baseball season comes to a close.? Alas, for the Red Sox it ended a bit before Labor Day this year; although there are playoff games that do not involve our hometown team.? Baseball is a less important aspect of life that it has been since early in the spring.? The Sox schedule comes down from the refrigerator – a sad day.

I know there are football games on television at least three nights a week but it is different than knowing one can turn on the radio and hear the dulcet tones of Joe Castiglione. Even when they are losing, it is still fun to listen and to watch, even if newer networks diminish the number of games available even to those of us who pay a premium for NESN on our cable service.?

At least we have elections, plenty of them.? In Boston we have an election every fall as a result of the spacing of local, state and national contests. Thankfully, soon after Election Day we have Thanksgiving and Christmas and holidays for various traditions that keep us going well into the end of the year.

For me, however, the fall remains a discouraging time of the year for all of these reasons.
