Fall 2023 Internship experience at Geisinger

I am delighted that my internship at Geisinger has been extended to Fall 2023.

Geisinger’s Steele Institute for Health Innovation was established to elevate and share Geisinger’s efforts to transform healthcare delivery by improving patient experience, quality, efficiency, and outcomes. It is transforming healthcare to better serve our communities through human centered design, and care delivery with a focus on affordability helping those most in need.

I work with Geisinger’s Business Intelligence Advanced Analytics team for developing and deploying Machine Learning model for various units. My time at Geisinger has been an exceptional growing and learning experience. I got the opportunity to work collaboratively with a high-caliber data science team that has won multiple national awards.

In my capacity as an intern, my primary duty involves the refinement of the existing model through the incorporation of supplementary features aimed at enhancing overall performance. My experience encompasses the development and evaluation of various machine learning models, with performance assessments conducted using metrics such as AUC-ROC, precision, and recall. I employ methodologies like Bootstrap and Cross Validation to gauge model effectiveness. To achieve this, I am utilizing programming languages such as SQL, Pyspark, and Pandas thereby enhancing my skills and knowledge in the process. The team regularly gathers for standups, touchpoints, and demo meetings. I work in a fast-paced environment which not only helped me apply a lot of technical skills but also has shaped my soft skills. The collaborative spirit at Geisinger is truly inspiring; team members are always open to providing assistance and are quick to offer a helping hand, fostering a positive and empowering atmosphere.

This internship opportunity has allowed me to utilize what I've learned from courses like Business Analytics with R, Predictive Analytics and Applied Machine Learning from my current master’s program at The University of Texas at Dallas. I would like to thank my mentor and my teammates for constantly encouraging me. Lastly, I would like to thank my Program Director – Gaurav Shekhar, for making me industry-ready.
