Fake It, Till You Make It!

Fake It, Till You Make It!

Recently, I made a post about False Motivation that I wanted to elaborate on. If you served in the military at any point, then you know False Motivation is a concept that suggests adopting to a positive mindset, even when you don't necessarily feel it. Practicing False Motivation can help teach you how to turn your negative thoughts into positive emotions and attitudes.

When stress and negativity begins to overwhelm us, this strategy can be a useful tool for managing difficult emotions and transforming your outlook on life. This week's newsletter is all about "faking it till you make it". I'm going to cover how it can be extremely useful for mental transformation, and provide you different ways to leverage False Motivation effectively.

"Faking it, Till You Make It"

When we think about stressors such as work, relationships, social pressures, and finances in today's economy, maintaining a positive mindset can be incredibly challenging. However, "faking it till you make it" offers a different kind of approach to coping with these stressors. False Motivation involves consciously having a positive attitude, even when you don't necessarily feel that way, with the goal of eventually creating authentic positive emotions.

When you actively pretend to be confident, happy, or motivated, you can trick the mind into believing that these feelings are real, which can ultimately lead to genuine emotional and psychological transformation.

Positive thinking plays such an important role in maintaining healthy mind and can have a significant impact on your mental well-being. False Motivation involves focusing on the good aspects of life, even in the face of adversity. A positive mindset can improve your resilience, help reduce stress, and can even improve your quality of life.

When you "fake" positive thoughts, you are essentially practicing positive thinking. Doing this consistently over time, can help shift your perspective and rewire your brain to focus more on positive experiences and less on negative ones.

Challenges With False Motivation

Although False Motivation can be an effective strategy for promoting positive change, you better believe it comes with its own challenges. For example, it may difficult to maintain a positive facade when you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed. Additionally, some people feel inauthentic or dishonest when "faking" their emotions, which can create feelings of guilt or discomfort.

To overcome these challenges, it is important to approach "faking it" with a sense of compassion and patience. Always remember that it is okay to have those difficult emotions and that "faking it" is merely a tool to help you manage these emotions more effectively. Additionally, it is important to set realistic expectations. I cannot stress this enough. Change doesn't happen overnight, and it may take time for the effects of False Motivation to become apparent. The main goal is to remain consistent and understand that this will take time.

Another challenge to False Motivation is the feeling of being burnt out. Pushing yourself with False Motivation can possibly lead to physical and mental exhaustion, making it difficult to maintain long-term efforts. It's always best to use small, manageable tasks to build momentum and confidence without overexerting yourself.

Additionally, When you pretend to be motivated, this could led you to feel inauthentic, causing internal conflict or dissatisfaction. The best way to overcome this is to align your goals with your core values. Think about why the task is important and how it connects to your long-term goals. Finding genuine meaning in your actions can help bridge the gap between false motivation and authentic feelings.

While "faking it till you make it" can be a powerful tool for personal growth, it is important to consider the ethical implications of this approach. For instance, there may be situations where "faking" positive emotions could be perceived as dishonest or manipulative. It is essential to strike a balance between authenticity and positivity, ensuring that you remain true to yourself while also striving for personal growth.

Tips for Effectively Using False Motivation

  • Always Start Small: You don't want your whole existence to be defined by inauthentic feelings. Start small by "faking" positive emotions in low-stakes situations, such as smiling at a coworker or giving someone a compliment. From there you can gradually work your way up to more challenging scenarios.
  • Try Using Positive Affirmations: This is one of the few times it's ok to sound like a "broken record". Try repeating positive affirmations to yourself daily. This can help you by reinforcing the emotions and attitudes you are trying to cultivate.
  • Practice Gratitude on the Daily: Try focusing on the positive aspects of your life by keeping a gratitude journal. I would even recommend starting your day listing the things you are grateful for.
  • Surround Yourself with Positivity: Have you ever heard the quote "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with"? This is why it's so important to spend time with positive, supportive people who uplift and inspire you.
  • Visualize Your Success: Begin to imagine yourself succeeding in situations you find to be challenging. Imagination is key! This can help boost your confidence and motivation as you see yourself achieving a goal you have set in place.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: I can't stress this enough. If you don't celebrate your success then who will? Be sure to acknowledge and celebrate your successes, no matter how big or small. Then build off that momentum to reinforce positive behaviors.
  • Be Patient with Yourself: This is one of most important tips I can provide. Being patient applies to more than just your health goals. Always remember that change takes TIME. It is not an overnight fix. Please be gentle with yourself if you experience setbacks and allow yourself the time to grow.
  • Seek Professional Support: When all else fails, consider seeking support from a therapist or counselor. Especially if you're finding it difficult to maintain a positive mindset.

Embracing the Power of False Motivation

"Faking it till you make it" is about finding the perfect balance between authenticity and positivity. Although it is very important to create and cultivate a positive mindset, it is equally important to acknowledge and stay true to your feelings. This means allowing yourself to experience difficult emotions when they arise and seeking support when needed. Balancing authenticity with positivity is such a great tool for growth without compromising your integrity or emotional well-being.

Consciously adopting positive behaviors and attitudes, even when you don't feel like it, you can eventually create real change in your life. Even with the challenges False Motivation brings, the benefits of increased confidence, resilience, and overall happiness make it a valuable tool for anyone looking to improve their mental health. With that being said, get out there and "fake it till you make it"! As always, stay healthy my friends!
