"Fake It 'Till You Make It" is Bullshit

Living in Dallas for most of the past decade, I have learned the term “$30,000-Millionaire”. You know, the person with the (leased) Maserati, the fancy loft apartment, tailored designer clothes, but somehow is the last person to reach for the check.

In Grant Cardone’s online training courses, he tells people to “eat at the fanciest restaurant to be seen and network” and “Buy the most expensive suit you can,” so that you can “look the part”. As much as I love Grant Cardone and (most) of his philosophies, this is utter bullshit. (Side note: I don’t see Grant wearing a suit in his Insta Stories these days…)

You can network from anywhere, wearing whatever you would like. As long as you be yourself.

As I write this blog post, I am sitting in first class…wearing Chucks and Hoodie. I drove to the airport in a 2015 Taurus with 150,000 miles on the odometer that was littered with my toddler’s snacks, toys, and trash. I didn’t pay for this ticket. I earned this upgrade from countless business trips. (Thanks, American Airlines). In fact, there is not a single person in first class tonight wearing an expensive suit. Where I am today, and where I aim to go, is purely built on the foundation of being unapologetically myself.

The idea you have to look the part to succeed is outdated, and can be sniffed out by even the most amateur noses.

Want to succeed? Work hard and be yourself

When you are your real and genuine self, you will be able to close the deal, make the sale, get the promotion, or lock down the meeting…regardless of the clothes on your back or the car you drive.

Puppets get spotted way before the individual realizes in most cases. Respect and passion to an organization can falter from others.
