Fake Profiles/Impersonators

Heads Up,??LinkedIn!

LinkedIn is a tool for professional contacts and job success, correct? Unfortunately, scammers and impersonators are increasingly targeting LinkedIn users, and their strategies are becoming more sophisticated.

Just consider my recent experience! I was approached by a profile claiming to be a Dental Nurse hoping to meet possible friends in Newcastle.

Now, let's be honest, at my age, and with all due respect to myself, I wouldn't consider myself an Adonis, like a few of my connections here. (some of you would give Pitt, a run for his money)

Plus, given her profile picture? A gorgeous woman, likely in her mid-20s. All of the red flags were waving.

Sure enough, when I politely requested some proof of their identification (maybe a picture with their dental ID?), things became crazy. A short reverse image search (Google Lens) revealed that the "Dental Nurse" was a stock photo model readily available online. Needless to say, the conversation concluded there.

Before you all ask ... yes i reported it

This is only one case, but it demonstrates a developing problem. LinkedIn's professional image makes it an ideal hunting ground for scammers. They rely on people's confidence and use the platform's emphasis on networking to launch a variety of frauds, ranging from phoney job offers to phishing schemes.

Here's how you can defend yourself

Investigate-Scepticism first

Be sceptical. Accept connection requests and engage in chats only after thoroughly verifying the profiles. Look for discrepancies, a lack of professional experience, or vague descriptions.

Verify, verify, verify. If someone appears questionable, request verification of their identification. Don't just rely on profile information.

Be wary of urgency. Scammers frequently use a sense of urgency to pressure you to act immediately. Trust your instincts and take your time.

Think before clicking. Never open links or download attachments from unknown senders. Phishing schemes are frequent

Report any questionable behaviour. If you come across a phoney profile or suspect a scam, report it to LinkedIn immediately.

By remaining attentive and raising awareness, we can make LinkedIn a safer environment for everyone. Let's keep the platform professional and prevent falling victim to these internet scams
