It is somewhat ironic that the term "fake news" is relatively new, but the problem of untruths and salacious reporting was a big problem in the 17th century.?The costs of printing pamphlets had gone down dramatically, so that lots of people were distributing news and rumours to the general population that in many cases were untrue ( social media anyone??). So, the government of the day banned them all.?However due to the plague of 1665 Charles 2nd relocated the government to Oxford as London was hit by up to 15% fatalities. Thereafter there needed to be a way to get information out to the public that was trusted i.e. distributed by the Crown.?The London Gazette was born, and it became the official public record. It became well known for bringing news from the empire and other overseas countries, it also contained much information on the exploits of brave serviceman during the wars. This became known as “mentioned in dispatches”.?It is not known exactly when it started reporting on insolvencies but we believe probably in the 19th century.

A few years ago, the London Gazette approached several lawyers and insolvency practitioners to write about aspects of insolvency to educate the public and called this Gazette Resources.?I was invited to write an article here https://lnkd.in/dHJrznif about company voluntary arrangements.?Presumably, they didn’t just ask anyone but only people with real experience and expertise in their chosen area!
