Have you ever been promised flexibility at work only to find out it was more of a marketing ploy than a reality? You started a new job, excited about the idea of flexible hours and remote work, only to realize the “flexibility” comes with strings attached. Does this sound familiar??

“Fake flexibility” refers to situations where an organization or individual pretends to offer flexibility, such as flexible work hours or remote work options, but in reality, the flexibility is limited or comes with many conditions. For example, a company might claim to support flexible working arrangements, but workers may still face pressure to be available at all hours, attend frequent in-person meetings, or adhere to strict schedules. This can lead to worker dissatisfaction and mistrust as the promised flexibility doesn’t genuinely exist or is not as beneficial as it appears.

So how do you spot fake flexibility and ensure your virtual assistant (VA), or remote work setup truly delivers the freedom you crave?

1. Flexibility Doesn’t Mean Chaos

Don’t confuse flexibility with a lack of structure. Clear expectations are essential. Define working hours, response times, and key deliverables. Without this, you’ll end up with a VA who’s available at all the wrong times or one who’s constantly “flexing” into your personal time. Flexibility should work for both parties, not just one.

2. The World Doesn’t Revolve Around You

You might be in New York, but your VA could be in Manila. Respect their time zone. Schedule meetings and set deadlines that consider this difference. Fake flexibility often ignores these nuances, leading to late-night work for your VA and subpar performance. Be mindful, and you’ll get the best out of your team.

3. Trust Is Key

Flexibility means trust. If you’re constantly breathing down your VA’s neck, you’re not offering real flexibility. Give them the freedom to manage their tasks and time. Micromanaging kills creativity and motivation faster than you can say “deadline.” Let go a little and see how your VA flourishes.

4. Tech Makes Flexibility Work

Ensure your VA has access to the tools and resources they need to do their job efficiently. This includes project management software, communication platforms, and any specific tools for their tasks. Fake flexibility promises freedom but leaves your VA struggling with inadequate tools. Equip them properly for true flexibility.

5. Don’t Set Them Up to Fail

Nothing says “fake flexibility” like unrealistic deadlines. Be realistic about what can be accomplished within a given timeframe. Understand that your VA has other commitments and responsibilities. Piling on tasks with impossible deadlines isn’t flexible; it’s just unfair.

6. Burnout Isn’t a Badge of Honor

Encourage your VA to take regular breaks. Remote work doesn’t mean working around the clock. True flexibility includes the ability to step away from the screen and recharge. Fake flexibility might suggest constant availability, but that’s a fast track to burnout. Promote a healthy work-life balance.

7. Flexibility Requires Clarity

Flexibility without clear communication is a recipe for disaster. Ensure there’s a steady flow of communication between you and your VA. Use clear, concise messages and check in regularly. Miscommunication can lead to missed deadlines and frustration. Keep the lines open and transparent.

8. Flexibility is a Two-Way Street

Flexibility should benefit both you and your VA. Regularly evaluate how things are going and be open to adjustments. If your current setup isn’t working, be willing to tweak it. Flexibility isn’t a one-time setup; it’s an ongoing process of improvement.
