THE PRODIGAL PATH

Proverbs 21:20 (NIV)

"The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down."

Reflection

The story of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) highlights not just reckless spending, but also a lack of contentment. He was discontent with his life at home, feeling that he deserved more. This dissatisfaction led him to demand his inheritance early, thinking that more wealth would bring happiness. But as Proverbs 21:20 says, "The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down." The prodigal son wasted everything on short-term pleasures, thinking they would satisfy him, only to end up broke and empty. His story teaches us that contentment with what we have is key to managing our resources wisely. When we’re content, we make better financial decisions, storing up for the future instead of wasting what we have in the present.

Prayer

Lord, give me the grace to overcome the urges of the flesh and the desire for instant gratification. Help me to cultivate discipline and the ability to manage my resources wisely. Teach me to be content with what I have and to avoid the temptation to compare myself to others. Guide me in overcoming the desires that lead me away from contentment, and help me to trust in Your provision for all that I need. May I use my resources in a way that honors You and secures my financial wellbeing for the future. Amen.

Action/Commitment

Today, identify one area where your spending is driven by impulsive desires or a lack of contentment, such as buying things you don't need or living beyond your means. Commit to cutting back on that specific habit. For example, if you often spend on unnecessary purchases, decide to set a budget and stick to it for the next month. Alternatively, if you're tempted by comparisons with others, make a conscious choice to stop comparing your lifestyle to theirs. Instead, focus on being content with what you have and use your resources wisely, saving a portion for the future.
