I could have been someone

You took my dreams from me

When I first found you

I kept them with me babe

I put them with my own

Can't make it all alone

I've built my dreams around you

So then, an average lad playing football back in the '80s and '90s, surrounded by talented, stronger boys, I never really found sports easy. Not everyone makes it. Attitude and distractions have spoiled many a decent player. Slow and lacking in confidence, I defaulted to left back. Nobody wakes up and says, 'I want to be a defender.'

I had horrible injuries, pulling the Achilles away from the bone; I never really recovered. Things happen for a reason.

However, I did captain the B team once at secondary school. We were thrashed 14-0 away at Pingle. Not my proudest moment, but some very valuable lessons were learned. We played against their A team. Maybe reminiscing or haunted, it’s nice to briefly look back.

As I look forward, I can honestly say my son has stepped into the football boots and is growing stronger and more confident with each game and training session.

It's thanks to all the parents and volunteers who make this possible.

Weather permitting, we’ll leave the phones and game consoles behind and knock about, getting some fresh air in those lungs over the Christmas break.

There’s nothing wrong with a B team; sometimes in business, you have to play all kinds of people and positions. It’s how we learn, grow, and develop.

Well done, Son. Onwards and upwards.
