Welcome to Going Places! This newsletter revolves around travel and storytelling, occasional travel and creative entrepreneurship news, and updates on my show, Going Places with Yulia Denisyuk.
First up, exploring the legacy of the fairy godmother concept.
My friend and powerhouse in the travel industry Beth Santos has recently written about the fairy godmother concept. Found inside the fairy tales I grew up reading, the fairy godmother concept teaches us that if only we work hard and if we are good people, someone will come in and help us, notice us, save us.
This concept tells us that if we're patient enough, we will be rewarded. But, as Beth points us, the world doesn't work like that and self-advocacy is one of the most important skills we can teach our girls.
I'm still unlearning this belief and I loved seeing this reminder from Beth. Read more about the fairy godmother concept here. (And don't skip the discussion in the comments section, where many more women chime in on this, too.)
My favorite places in Jordan.
On the show this week, I'm in the guest seat for once: my friend and podcast producer Noelia Sanchez interviews me about my favorite places in Jordan.
I also share the origin story of my relationship with Jordan (I've never shared this publicly before), what people get wrong about Jordan and the Middle East, and what first-time travelers to Jordan should see and experience.
Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube.
?? And if you want to see Jordan in person, don't miss this ??
Booking.com is running a summer getaway deal.
Although June has passed in a blink of an eye, the summer trips are just starting for some of us. I, for one, will be returning to Crete in a few weeks for a short reset.
If you're on the lookout for a summer trip, the getaway deal by Booking.com might be helpful. It provides at least 15% off at a number of properties worldwide, as long as you book and stay by September 30.

Guess This Place
I love Crete so much that I'm returning to this island in Greece for the second time this year. I spent a few splendid days on assignment in Crete this May, reviewing the storied Minos Beach Art Hotel (stay tuned for an upcoming article about this experience). This July, I'm returning to Crete to rest – and to write a book proposal. Wish me luck!
