Fairspace Highlights: Sunshine, Safety, and Significant Changes!
Dear friend of Fairspace,
Welcome to our June newsletter! In this edition, we are thrilled to share the highlights of our recent activities and initiatives. From participating in a thought-provoking panel discussion to hosting an engaging pop-up event at the beach and conducting impactful leadership training sessions, we've been busy making strides in our mission.
Additionally, we turn our focus to the significant new law on sexual offences set to take effect on July 1st, which will make sexual harassment in public spaces punishable by law. This crucial development promises to create safer environments for everyone.
Join us as we dive into these stories and more, showcasing our ongoing efforts to promote safety, awareness, and positive change in our community.
?As always, happy reading and stay in touch!
In the news
Starting July 1st, sexual harassment in public, also known as street harassment, will be a punishable offense nationwide. Utrecht, Rotterdam and Arnhem will launch a pilot programme enabling municipal enforcement officers (BOAs) to take action against such behaviour.
The pilot programme will focus on the role of BOAs and the practicalities of enforcement. How feasible and effective is enforcement by BOAs? A special team of BOAs has been trained and given the authority to act on instances of sexual harassment. When BOAs observe sexual harassment, they can issue a formal report, which will then be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service and evaluated by a judge.
To ensure BOAs work in a trauma-sensitive manner, Fairspace was invited to facilitate part of the training programme. Our efforts aim?to equip BOAs with the skills and understanding needed to handle cases of sexual harassment with the sensitivity and care that people who have been harassed?deserve.
